The UK will vote in favour of the UN General Assembly resolution that gives the entire @UN membership a voice on the use of a veto. Being a permanent member of the Security Council is a responsibility the UK takes seriously. #VetoInitiative
Liechtenstein has now tabled, on behalf of 38 cosponsors, a resolution that mandates a meeting of the #UN General Assembly whenever a veto is cast in the Security Council - the #VetoInitiative. The resolution is a meaningful step to empower the GA and strengthen multilateralism.
There are important initiatives gaining traction that seek to increase accountability & scrutiny of the veto. One such proposal, led by @LiechtensteinUN, is “The Veto Initiative” which enhances the role of the General Assembly in evaluating/responding to P5 veto-use in the UNSC
