@Elijah_Bryant3 Add to that it's just not beautiful basketball, watch a team like Utah State that has offensive schemes that shares the ball, moves the ball, has cuts and screens that get people open, it's just so much more fun to watch, nobody can deny that! Us last year was even way better 🤷🏼‍♂️

@TrueBlueEyeDoc @AJ_Dybantsa Basketball is simple. Create an advantage and play off it. On defense, take advantages away. BYU’s advantage was playing through #3 and spacing around that. The roster was built around strengths, not positions.

If you're mad at the players for not stepping up and helping @AJ_Dybantsa last night, I get it. But before you go off, you need to understand what actually happened. This isn't as simple as guys not caring. Let me break this down. 🧵

@Elijah_Bryant3 @AJ_Dybantsa You can argue against what I'm saying, but you're defending decisions didn't even allow us to lead for more than 22 seconds, let alone losing us the game! And that isn't just offense, it's also terrible ability to play screen defense, too. We need better schemes, period.

@Elijah_Bryant3 I get playing through him, yet ONLY playing through #3 lead to playing losing basketball when it mattered most. It's exactly what Texas wanted. Play through #3 while others cut and screen for each other! Also screen for him more often with a shooting threat! ...

@Elijah_Bryant3 @AJ_Dybantsa I don't disagree that more schemes can create indecision. I'm arguing for different schemes, not more. In regards to more options, there's no way having another option like a skilled/physical 7-footer that can make a 3-footer consistently wouldn't have helped.

@TrueBlueEyeDoc @AJ_Dybantsa Sometimes more options and more schemes just create indecision. Good teams know their advantage and keep the game simple.

@Elijah_Bryant3 @AJ_Dybantsa And I think not having a skilled big man in the post really hurt for spacing, especially with no threat to score down low; teams could easily double off of big-man screens cuz our bigs couldn't do squat with the ball once they got it, & lobs didn't work the 2nd part of the year.

@Elijah_Bryant3 @AJ_Dybantsa It's the offensive and defensive scheme and a lack of a skilled/physical big man that was our downfall this game, even this season. No ability to utilize screens properly on O, and poor pick-n-roll screen defense. Defer to AJ on O, no movement, no fluidity, no confusion created.

@Elijah_Bryant3 @AJ_Dybantsa Umm it was still a problem when those three played together... Our defense was just as bad with Richie, and sure, our offense was better, but not enough ball movement and poor screen usage the entire year. Our shooters couldn't consistently make anything outside of those 3.

@PotterColton It was more the system than anything else... Injuries certainly contributed, but we've had poor defensive schemes each year so far, and this year the offense was to defer to AJ and sometimes Rob or Ritchie, creating a lack of empowering players to shoot confidently.

Some jarring numbers from BYU's loss to Texas that I think sum up the Cougars season: 0 bench points 6 total assists 4/22 3-pt field goals Texas: 36% from 3 Biggest deficit: 17 points Hard to win with inconsistent production from a majority of your team. Hard to win when you don't shoot the three well and can't guard the three. Hard to win when you consistently dig yourself a big hole.

@cougjazzstan @PostJimmer Agreed, I really was afraid we would waste AJ's year because of people talking about us like what happened with LSU and Ben Simmons or KSU and Beasley. I was hoping it wouldn't happen to us, but in the back of my head I was worried it would somehow, and it came to fruition

I understand BYU fans are disappointed. We all are. But you also need to grasp that this was never supposed to be the team. This team was supposed to have Richie, Dawson and Nate. Got a bunch of bad injury luck and could never fully overcome it. It’s frustrating, but it happens.

@cougjazzstan @PostJimmer I bet their numbers at practice are incredible and sufficient for shooting well, just had tons of mental pressure on them in games to make or get benched, except Moo and Rob cuz of the other things they did (defense for Moo, ball-handling for Rob).

@cougjazzstan @PostJimmer I think we have good shooters... I think Moo is a good shooter, I think Kostic is a good shooter, I think Mrus is a good shooter, same with Rob Wright. They just didn't get empowered to shoot with confidence. No rhythm, yanked immediately if you miss. It's partly systemic.

@For3JT Please tell the coaches they need to learn how to utilize screens on offense and defend screens better on defense. It's because of those two deficiencies that we couldn't get open in-rhythm 3s for our role players, and why our defense sucked much of the latter half of the year.

@tlacomb On top of that, terrible defensive scheme for most of the season, too, and why the freak can we not recruit an actually skilled and physical 7-footer to BYU with Burgess on the staff? It's ridiculous.

I see @BYUMBB to Sweet 16 at a minimum. The way KY helped these young guys find an identity over the last couple games was impressive. All about Matchups.

@tlacomb Actually, they took a 21-20 lead after that funky start. Maybe the team just wasn't that great this year. Poor offensive scheme - only deferring to AJ (or sometimes Rob), essentially zero ball movement, and not empowering shooters to be confident in shooting. It's bad coaching.

@KGrahamContent Everything was built around AJ. No ball movement, no motion on offense, no defensive confusion created. Just get it to AJ or Rob and let them cook. Not very beautiful basketball, and it cost us. The NBA model sucks, and it'll suck if we keep it the same next year.

Losing in the first round with the best player in college basketball you're paying millions for is inexcusable and a complete failure of a season. BYU/Kevin Young really needs to assess this "NBA" model they have put in place. Sure Dybantsa is NBA ready but it didn't do much for the program winning wise did it?

@cougjazzstan @PostJimmer It's a complete mystery that we have Burgess on our staff 2 different times and we have yet to recruit any skilled 7-footers. Huge miss on that. Also, the offensive system is the reason our shooters couldn't make anything. It didn't empower our guys to have any shot confidence.

@BYUGuy87 AJ was the reason why we were good, but also why we sucked at offense at the end of the season... The offense was to completely defer to him for everything, and it got every other player out of any rhythm with zero ball movement. Static iso ball doesn't work in March.

Are you kidding me? BYU has multiple possessions to score at the end and just squanders each opportunity. As disappointing as this team was defensively this year, the offensive lapses and inability to get a bucket when needed, ultimately sunk us. So many chances. Smh.

@collinsworth55 Crazy with Burgess on staff two different times we have been completely unable to recruit a true low-post scoring center... They have no ability to shoot into an ocean from even three feet out, and Fouss doesn't count cuz he was way too short... We need a s killed 7-footer.

@DallinwBYU Unfortunately this scheme clearly force feeds the heavy hitters and doesn't play a true team offensive system that allows for any others to get many shots or to even feel free to take more shots. You can see sometimes that they simply defer to AJ or RWIII when they get the ball🤦🏼‍♂️
