BYU went 11-2 last year. Stumbled a little down the stretch but bounced back incredibly well from a 5-7 first year in the Big 12.
BYU had high expectations, projected to be a top 15 team entering the preseason but lost their quarterback in August and turned to a true freshman at QB who joined the team in May.
Way too much was put into the loss of Jake Retzlaff at QB by people outside of BYU. Bear has certainly exceeded expectations and is a big reason they are 10-1 but the biggest reason is because BYU has a GREAT TEAM. Balanced, efficient, well-coached.
The obsession from the committee on blowing horrible teams out and losing close games to good teams is asinine. BYU has played a lot of really good teams this season. I would contend it is more impressive to go 10-1 against BYU’s schedule than 9-2 against Notre Dame’s. Losing to the two best teams on your schedule shouldn’t be rewarded. BYU went 1-1 against the two best teams they played. The Tech loss was bad but why does Alabama get a pass for a loss to Florida State but BYU doesn’t for losing to the No. 5 team in the country? Oregon gets credit for wins over Penn State and Iowa because we thought they were good at the time. BYU gets knocked because of close wins to Arizona and Iowa State because people thought they weren’t great.
BYU has a top 5 resume in the country. Sure they aren’t a top 10 power rated team but let’s reward teams that over perform, not teams that under perform because of “eye test” and Vegas and power ratings.
Assuming BYU beats UCF, BYU is a playoff worthy team regardless of what happens in Arlington and it is ridiculous that isn’t a given.
