Marrying a child at 12 or 13 is not just “child marriage.” As @FirstLadyBio said, it’s “legalized rape.”
When a girl is forced into marriage, she loses control over her life. She is forced into sex she is too young to consent to and into pregnancy before her body is ready. She is often pulled out of school. Too often, the cycle continues, with her daughters more likely to be forced into child marriage themselves.

NEW report from the @ColumbiaIGP Women’s Initiative: Accelerating Efforts to End Child Marriage
Child marriage is not only a human rights violation - it is an economic issue.
The costs of inaction on child marriage are staggering: in addition to the human toll, this report includes a new analysis produced by @CGDev that estimates losses of up to $175 billion per year, or almost $2.5 trillion by 2040, from lost productivity and increased health risks due to child marriage. #EndChildMarriage
