Your mother is problematic. Your father is problematic. Your son is problematic. Your aunt is problematic. The cashier at the local Tesco is problematic. You've probably bought a cookie from a bakery made by hands that have done unspeakable things. Every chocolate bar you've ever eaten has probably killed a 7 year old child slave in Cameroon. The gas that drives your car is fueled by engines of death. Every person who has ever smiled at you in the streets has committed some act that if you knew about it, would make you profoundly dislike them.
We have all been bad, small, petty, unlikeable, cruel, downright mean. Authors are not special "problematic" beings, they're just more public. Part of being an adult is recognizing that without mercy for our fellow human beings, and ourselves, we'd all be condemned to death. Reading fiction should help us understand that we're all irreparably tainted with evil, every system is corrupted, every line is broken.
And like, that's okay. That's what it means to be alive.

honestly i'm this close to quitting reading for good. every single author i actually love turns out to be problematic or worse. i'm so tired of finding out after i already got attached. feels like i can't enjoy anything anymore without a background check first

@mintyfia Also do people think "I can't draw a full lungs-worth of breath in" is something you can just overcome with can-do attitude?! You need a certain amount of blood oxygen to play at your fullest, and if you physically can't get it there is nothing you can do about that.

@DDual48 @MinModulation I think we as human beings are much stronger than that. It isn't that works can't change us- of course they can; that is their beauty and their power, but we are active participants in that process. They cannot change us any way we don't agree to be changed.

@Wildfyrewarning @MinModulation that’s a good point, i’ve always just been afraid that a person with bad beliefs will be able to seep their ideology to me in ways that will look agreeable and i’ll just accept it, but yeah if i don’t reject it myself then my beliefs are never mature

Being afraid of reading "problematic authors" is due to your own insecurity with your beliefs and identity. You think that if you read "bad people", you'll become bad yourself, soaking up their toxins like a dim sponge. This is because you are stupid and can't trust yourself.

@Wildfyrewarning @sjbear32 Which tbf could well also present with an ed (source: my own), but doesn’t always. It’s funny how people seem to be able to accept not everything presents completely the same way when THEY’RE the exception, but so seldom any other time 😭

and if i say rr is exactly right to point out that disordered eating habit does not immediately equal a full blown eating disorder but some fans are lowkey glorifying ed suffering and trying to make shane’s story different that what was written??

they’re about to get her again but ref. shane’s “ed” i’ve ALWAYS agreed it doesn’t track as an actual disorder. he goes from not eating to suddenly eating normally again pretty quickly. people were always retroactively labeling something that wasn’t written to be that 🤷♀️

@idrilka_ I have literally never posted a multi-chapter fic where I didn't *at least* have the first couple of chapters done, and most of the time I had the whole work completed (or close to it) before I ever hit "post".

everything else aside, this is quite possibly the most misguided way to judge whether something was written by an AI or not, because it's not like authors start writing their fic the day they publish the first chapter
