The Conservatives are set to force a vote in Parliament to exempt rapists, pedophiles, grooming gang members, and all other sexual offenders from Labour's early prison release scheme. Under the Sentencing Act 2026, some prisoners are due to be released early from September to ease prison overcrowding. Reports that serious sexual offenders could be eligible have sparked widespread backlash. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said it is "frankly disgusting" that convicted rapists, pedophiles and grooming gang members could be released early, accusing Labour of ignoring repeated warnings when the legislation was passed. The Conservative motion would exclude any offender convicted of a sexual offense against an adult or child, including rape, grooming, attempted offenses, conspiracy and incitement, from the early release scheme. The party has also launched DontFreeRapists . com, urging the Government to reverse course. Senior Labour figures have also voiced concerns. Andy Burnham is reportedly exploring changes to prevent child sex offenders from qualifying for early release, while former Labour minister Jess Phillips has called for additional exemptions to keep adults who rape children in prison for longer. The vote will put Labour and the Liberal Democrats under pressure to decide whether to back the Conservative proposal to keep serious sexual offenders out of the early release scheme.
