Eastern North Carolina, here’s an inspiring story that highlights the bright future awaiting our young people right here at home. During the State of the Union Address, I had the honor of hosting a native son of Hyde County, Nathanael Simmons, a remarkable 17-year-old, eighth-generation farmer who exemplifies the spirit of resilience and hope in our part of the state. While many farmers face challenges, Nathanael stands as a shining example for the next generation, reminding us that our roots can lead us to incredible heights. His presence at the State of the Union coincided with an extraordinary moment in space exploration. NASA's Artemis II mission is truly revolutionary, aiming to "unlock the next generation of space exploration." Just 42 days after the State of the Union, this brave crew traveled further from Earth than any humans have before, reaching an astonishing 252,756 miles—surpassing the Apollo 13 record set in 1970. The mission serves not just as a testament to human ingenuity but as a challenge to all of us: let’s ensure that records like this inspire rather than intimidate. It's time for our young people, especially those from eastern NC, to dream big and pursue their passions, whether in agriculture or aviation sciences after completing first-rate programs like those at Elizabeth City State University, or in any field or school they choose. While at the State of the Union, we discussed with the astronauts the food that they would eat in space. It was heartwarming to hear Christina Hammock Koch, who grew up in Jacksonville, is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and an NC State University alum, talk about her love for space cuisine. If she can reach for the stars from eastern North Carolina, imagine what our young people can achieve. Let Nathanael's and this fantastic crew’s journey be a reminder that while many leave to seek opportunities elsewhere, there is tremendous potential here in eastern North Carolina to create a bright future. Your dreams matter. Your roots are your strength. Embrace them, and let them propel you to new heights. Together, let's inspire the next generation to stay or return as innovators and leaders who will cultivate our land and explore the stars, reclaiming the future of eastern North Carolina. Artemis II, eastern NC welcomes you back home!

On this date in 1777, the newly formed N.C. General Assembly met in New Bern and passed legislation creating the state court system.
