A smile that survived more than 1,000 years. This hollow ceramic figure is one of the sonrientes — “smiling figures” — made in Veracruz, Mexico, during the Precolumbian period. Its open smile is unusual in Mesoamerican art, where emotion is rarely shown so directly. Holding a gourd rattle and dressed with patterned ornaments, it may have been connected to music, ceremony, and ritual life.
