Fuel cheaper this morning? No. Two reasons. 1. Truckers and farmers deal was almost exclusively subsidies for themselves. 2. Trump. Who the protests support. Oil over 100 a barrel again today. And heading up. People don't realise what the next year is going to be like. This is the easy and fun bit.

@EwanMacKenna Based on package so far, the farmers got least. So sounds like you're a pro government propaganda artist today. Whatever changed since Friday when you were more willing to understand the issues

Why they went home... Brown envelope for themselves, paid by everyone else. So obvious. So predictable. So back you all go to work tomorrow as there's tax to be paid to fund their easier life, now yours is harder. Check your fuel costs tomorrow. Because they'll be identical.

There are people who think the trucker and farmer deal with see costs reduced and savings to average consumer. Yes, the people that stopped everyone working and living, lied, and did grubby deal for themselves will definitely not trouser that cash. They'll share it. 😂😂😂😂

@EwanMacKenna Some of the negotiators on the protesters side have been in this before. They've learnt a lot. Their main issue is the idiots joining in that don't have a cause except trouble

Government is horrible but far smarter around a table than those over the protests. They'll offer their sector subsidies and it'll be like sausages to dogs. They'll take their hands off. Everyone else pays for those celebrating a win. Division. Conquered. Just a guess. Hope wrong

@EwanMacKenna Why are the army in now when they haven't been introduced against protests in the past? Why weren't they minding Mary Harney etc? Is it because the water meters was an urban issue and high tax on fuel is a rural one?

I sense the protests are losing support for five reasons... 1. The rationale. Lower taxes now but no protests when higher taxes. 2. The nefarious actors hijacking this. 3. The swathes of support for the reasons for the prices hikes (Trump and Israel). 4. Hurting ordinary people who also have bills and jobs, by targeting the wrong places. 5. There's a fair sense the demands are "give us money", the rest don't matter. Again I'm not against them, in principle, and understand much of it, but even as somewhat of an anarchist I'm reluctant to jump on this as it's far from black and white.

@EwanMacKenna Green diesel went from 1.04 to 1.65, a 50% increase. Government reduced by 3c. White diesel went from 1.79 to 2.25, c25% increase. Govt reduced by 20c and said reduce driving. Users of Agri diesel had a larger increase in costs and no option of reducing discretionary use.

Don't the farmers who are protesting use green diesel legally, which is taxed far lower already and has the carbon tax at a far reduced rate on it? Again not saying if protests right or wrong, just wondering the facts and what their issue is?

@higginsdavidw Agri diesel has gone from 1.04 to 1.65 in 8 weeks. It's not a discretionary spend. Farming is a marginal income. The subsidies are purely to maintain low food prices. Your tweet is a summary of why there's protests. Many share your views but don't understand the issues.

The fuel debate has several economic and data sins at once: ❌ Comparing Spain fuel prices to Ireland without comparing wages ❌ Sharing the % of taxes on diesel before the March 25th excise cut (now a lower %) ❌ Thinking farmers are hit by headline diesel prices (they pay much lower taxes on marked gas oil). ❌ Claiming farmers are going out of business by taxes. They are (rightly) in receipt of massive EU subsidies so food is affordable for all households.

@anspailpin @Kazoochka @morningireland 1/2 Is it not a case that they're out of touch/ don't give a monkeys about rural Ireland? They took 20c/l off white diesel vs 3c off agri diesel. Yet agri diesel went up 50% (1.04 to 1.65) in 3 weeks vs white going up c30%. And the 'answer' is 'drive less'.

Gavin Jennings asked one of the protesters what gave him the right to bring the country to a halt on @morningireland this morning. The protester asked what gave the government the right to cripple the people with a carbon tax. Gavin Jennings moved on, for some reason, while >>
Kevin Egan@lonesharkoy

Just to be clear, on a point of fact both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael committed to the carbon tax in their pre-election manifesto, they are NOT anti-democratic. At a time like this, it's more important than ever to not like schysters and liars spin falsehoods for their own ends.

Israel will break any ceasefire always. Two reasons. 1. Its government survived and thrives on mass murdering for popular support from a vile population. 2. Now is no different to its entire disgusting existence, spent trying to drag others into war for it. Because not only is it disgusting, it's lazy and cowardly. The cesspit of humanity.

I'll be contesting the Galway West by‑election as an independent candidate. My campaign centres on a ‘Galway First’ message. Galway needs a stronger voice in national decision‑making, one that can secure funding/support measures only where they deliver for Galway city and county.
