John White, the governor of the second settlement (the one that went missing) actually survived because he was sent back to England for fresh supplies, unfortunately he was stuck in England for 3 years due to the Spanish Armada and the outbreak of war. His granddaughter Virginia Dare was the first English child to be born in the Americas, and he was also a talented artist who crucially recorded native american life at the time of English contact. He is the one depicted in the famous "Croatoan" artworks

Aparte de leer a los clásicos (Díaz del Castillo, Las Casas, López de Gómara, las cartas de relación de Cortés) solo habré leído una docena escasa de libros sobre el tema. Con esto quiero decir que estoy muy lejos de ser un especialista en la materia, pero que no soy totalmente ignorante. Dicho esto, si estáis interesados en el tema, estos libros (que ya he mencionado en más de una ocasión) son los que más me han influido entre los que he leído en los últimos años. 1) Towsend, Camilla (2021) Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs. N. York: OUP. Esencial para entender la formación de la cultura y sociedad aztecas anterior a la llegada de los españoles, y la evolución posterior a la conquista. Es cortito (336 págs, incluidas las notas, índice y bibliografía) y está muy bien escrito. 2) Covey, Alan (2020) Inca Apocalypse: The Spanish Conquest and the Transformation of the Andean World. N. York; Oxford; OUP. Más denso que el primero. Su gran mérito está en el análisis que hace de la visión apocalíptica (ciclos de destrucción/creación) de las sociedades incaicas y cómo la conquista española fue interpretada por ellas e integrada en su propia interpretación del mundo y del devenir históricos. 3) Cervantes, Fernando (2021) Conquistadores: Una historia diferente. Madrid; Editorial Turner. Yo leí la versión en inglés, cuando lo publicaron, pero dado que hay edición en español, aquí os la dejo. Al contrario que los dos anteriores este se centra, como habréis deducido por el título (😅) en los conquistadores. No se enfoca tanto en la narración de los acontecimientos como en entender y explicar las mentalidades, motivaciones, mecanismos de coerción, justificaciones legales, dudas y conflictos internos de los propios conquistadores ¿Tenemos derecho a conquistar estos pueblos? ¿Cómo justificamos el poblamiento y la fundación de ciudades? ¿Son guerras justas? ¿Cuáles son los límites? ¿Cómo racionalizamos la codicia, para integrarla dentro de las conquistas, sin perder de vista el objetivo moral de convertir a los nativos en buenos cristianos y súbditos del rey? 4) Carballo, David M. (2020) Collision of Worlds. A deep history of the fall of aztec Mexico and the forging of New Spain. N.York: OUP. Lo que más interesante me ha resultado de este libro es que no se detiene en la llegada y conquista. En muchos trabajos tradicionales parece como si la caída de Tenochtitlan fuera el final de la historia, en vez de un punto de inflexión en el devenir de los pueblos que habitaban el Valle de México, y de los propios conquistadores, por supuesto. Carballo no se detiene en 1521, sino que se pregunta ¿Y qué pasó después? ¿Cómo chocaron, se integraron, se mediatizaron la una a la otra, las culturas mexica y española para dar lugar a Nueva España? Ésta es solo una pequeña muestra. Hay mucho más escrito y, como ya expliqué al principio, no soy un especialista en el período. Seguro que otros que sí son americanistas pueden complementar esta lista (¡O criticarla, que para eso estamos!) con más títulos.
