AI is the next era of digital technology — and the question is whether it will stay open. At the India AI Impact Summit, Mark Surman talks about why open-source AI can help developers and countries adapt technology to their own languages, cultures, and needs. What does AI sovereignty mean? @raffi puts it simply: “I define it as ‘can you walk away?’” Right now, the developer experience around sovereign AI stacks makes that difficult — but open-source tools are evolving. Mark Surman is joining TVO for a live taping this Friday — if you’re in Ontario, come out and be part of the audience. It’s set to be a great conversation about tech, public interest, and the choices ahead. We’ll post the video after the show for everyone else to tune in. tvo.org/tvo-today-live

@anivar Thanks @anivar - we'll share these thoughts forward (and your paper) with the team. We really appreciate it - clearly this is a topic to be much more precise on. More to come.

(2/2) Bigger picture:  Our position on openness hasn't changed. Open standards are not the same as open source or open governance - UPI uses open standards, but it is not open-source infrastructure, and publishing APIs doesn't make something structurally open. The op-ed was making a sovereignty argument: countries should build their own AI infrastructure, not rent it. India proved with UPI that domestic infrastructure at scale is possible. However, we weren't precise enough about the distinction between that achievement and genuine openness. With AI, we have the chance to build infrastructure that's both sovereign and genuinely open.

I write this as someone who was part of India’s DPI adversarial phase. During the Firefox OS and early Rust years, I chaired Mozilla India’s policy and advocacy task force and worked closely with Mozilla’s global policy teams while Aadhaar, UPI, and net neutrality debates were unfolding.

@raffi's new op‑ed makes a simple point: no country needs to build AI alone — but none should be locked into someone else’s stack. Open standards and shared infrastructure provide nations with the flexibility to collaborate while shaping their own AI futures. restofworld.org/2026/india-ai-… #IndiaAIImpactSummit2026

In New Delhi for the #IndiaAIImpactSummit2026, Mark Surman offered some optimism in this @POLITICOEUTech story. "Mozilla’s Surman argues the scale of the event in fact allows alternative tech players ... to find one another. That could give people choices beyond the mainstream tools in a field dominated by the biggest tech players from America" politico.eu/article/how-th…

Mozilla is in New Delhi for the India AI Impact Summit with a clear message: open source AI is the path to digital + economic sovereignty. Decentralised. Inspectable. Built in the public interest. India’s developers, founders, and creators are already leading the way.

Heads up: My new @FastCompany story has a few @starwars references! I recently interviewed @mozilla president Mark Surman about the new "State Of Mozilla" report, the role of user choice and control with AI, and his vision for a "rebel alliance" focused on responsible tech.

What’s crazier, thinking we can build a movement to counter big tech, or being so hungry for resources you’d start building data centers on the moon? @MartySwant @FastCompany captures our vision: a “rebel alliance” for trustworthy, open tech and a future where you can decide when AI shows up in your browser.
