@akira_ca This is a slightly simplified recipe by a great American chef and scholar of Mexican cuisine of this mole. In Oaxaca you will get the full thing. You must try it if you are there. rickbayless.com/recipe/oaxacan…

@akira_ca Did you try the black mole? Oaxaca is famous for this. Very complex recipe.

Don’t try to learn too much in advance about what it is about. Just watch it. At night.

One of my favorite underrated Tom Cruise films is Michael Mann’s Collateral. Tom Cruise is the “villain” (in grey hair!) and it is beautifully shot in LA at night, one of my favorite film genres, hardly la la land. It creates so much atmosphere. Wait for the scene in the alley.
Russ Roberts@EconTalker

Arguably the most successful actor of his generation. And wildly underrated. If he had done none of his action films, his resume is superb: Jerry Maguire. Minority Report. Rain Man. A Few Good Men. Gorgeous retrospective and I will see Digger.

@DKThomp Anthony Lane was a master of this. Did he like the movie? was so besides the point.

@DKThomp Au contraire, this is the only magazine allowed to do this and is part of its ineffable charms. But they better have gotten some real one to write that, not easy. Even their actual film reviews, it is frequently not clear whether the person liked the movie or not, but that works.

@npparikh Do you care to elaborate how it is "really complicated to do it right here" in NYC?

I was asked by City Hall about some self driving car regulation back in 2020 I think. I basically killed it then. But I don’t think NYC is an easy or simple market for *many* reasons and would also not advise letting them deploy yet. It’s *really* complicated to do it right here.
Adam Nash@adamnash

This always looks like luddism or political capture to Silicon Valley (and it often is), but world-class tourist cities can strangely benefit from slow rolling technology in exchange for nostalgia & vibes. London, Paris, Rome, etc. They are late majority adopters, at best.

@adamnash I wasn’t disagreeing with you, just making an adjacent point on the same topic it reminded me of.

@npparikh ... I think you just confirmed my point? Cities like New York are almost always going to be late adopters, for a whole host of reasons (both good and bad).

Cruise is a once-in-a-generation lead actor and a brilliant stuntman but roles that emphasize his iconic status like the MI franchise or Top Gun tend to obscure his actual acting skills which are just as impressive when given a morally complex/ambiguous character to play. Collateral is a great example, the rare time in his career where he straight-out plays the villain and nails it. Magnolia is another. I suspect as soon as he can no longer throw himself off mountain cliffs he'll go down as one of the best dramatic actors of his generation, up there with DDL.
Tom Cruise@TomCruise

For the last 46 years, it has been my privilege to work alongside countless talented artists and crews to create these characters, stories, and films for you all. I'm looking forward to seeing you at the movies! DIGGER. Only in theaters this October.

Enough with this ~high of 80 but it will feel like 95.~ If you're so sure that it'll feel like 95, the biggest number that I want to read on your app should say: 95. I don't care to know the number that the temperature technically is but which I am not expected to feel.

SF is not a very relevant test bed other than basic technical functioning really (which I’m not downplaying) for many reasons, some technical, some market, some policy, just many different interlocking issues. There’s no big rush here.

I often hear from many New Yorkers that they want to move away but their jobs or family relationships are keeping them in place. Earnest questions: Have people who feel this way considered Jersey City? If not, why not? If so, what prevented you from giving it a try?

@Miles_Brundage I respect your saying this stuff plainly despite your senior role and history there, for what it’s worth. I don’t think it’s a small thing or to be taken for granted; many would not do it.

I once went to the NeurIPS in Spain. It was so fucking hot in the hotel I couldn’t sleep for a week and I remember giving a workshop talk there feeling nearly high and vacant. I was saying words that made sense but I was barely there. I slept 18 hours after getting to London.
