We must really stop viewing encounter killings as some form of justice. As tempting as it can be, it is fraught with risks. In Uttar Pradesh, where police encounter has become a state policing policy, we are witnessing those accused of petty crimes being shot dead in completely staged encounters. There are also 6000+ cases of half-encounters (knee-capping) since 2017. Many, many innocent citizens are murdered or maimed in this blood-lust sanctioned by the state government. Naturally, encounter has become a business model in many districts because there is absolute impunity. This spectacle of encounters also keeps the public happy but it is now coming back to bite them. This policy must be strongly discouraged in other progressive states, like Tamil Nadu. @ptrmadurai @arivalayam If the police has to resort to encounters to control law & order, it denotes a grave failure of governance and is a blot on the criminal justice system. Don’t let the state fool you. Strongly demand that your system be fixed. Why is it taking forever to construct courts? Why is digitisation not taking place at the speed required? Why are judges of talent not being appointed? Why are exams prone to leak? Why are legal procedures not being simplified? If we don’t fix these systemic issues, I’m afraid we are digging our own graves. I had written about this in a long-form investigation for @newlinesmag this year.
