@pbaJackson Whoa, congrats on all these accomplishments - incredible job! (I'm starting my new gig as Assistant Professor tomorrow, researching all things aging/AD; reading this I'm super motivated that great things ARE indeed possible during that dreaded first year.)

@ecleclecl @njoybetz Thank you! Yes, that's exactly what I mean. Lots of comments meant to go against students having to share rooms/beds used the angle, "Would a prof do that?" And yes, some would. It easily creates a narrative that suggests that doing x is okay as long as your prof would do x too.

@njoybetz @schnuffichen But some are. That's the point. Some people believe parents bedsharing with a child/teen is abusive so there's differences of opinion. I'm generally wary of dominant culture = professionalism. Still, I take your point of not putting students in situations uncomfortable to them.

@RunningforBaby @Helene731 @laurenthehough Great that that's been your experience. It hasn't been mine, and I've had to collect my carry-on containing broken contents from baggage claim. (It's made me travel with a backpack, which is less likely to be gate-checked, rather than line up early, but I get why folks do it.)

People who stand at the gate waiting to rush onto the plane, explain yourselves. Like did you know you can hang out at the bar nursing your drink until they call final boarding call and you’ll get the exact same seat and the plane leaves at the exact same time?

@ChelseaMagin Very specific to my field (Neuroscience): Our library can make 3D prints on the basis of MRI scans. Most students serve as a pilot participant to try out a new MRI sequence at some point, so I usually have their brains "on file" to give them a 3D print of their brain.

@MattieWex You mean (the result of) conversion/zero-derivation, but a specifically historical-linguistics term? (Like how "invite" used to be exclusively a verb, but is now (?) also used as a noun?)

Linguists: is there a specific historical linguistics term for when a word changes syntactic categories?

@thai101 @jtbirchall What a great idea for a paper! I (born and bred East-German) recently learned that folks from former West-Germany usually lexicalize 🦆sounds as /kva:k/ (or /ga:k/), whereas it's /na:k/ for most (?) East-Germans. 😳

Student from Structure of Thai came to office hours to ask if it was too frivolous of a final paper topic to study how various animal sounds are lexicalized in Thai vs another language and I was like are you kidding me write it right now I demand to read it 😅

@SebastianSauppe I just recently (like, last month) discovered AlignTool, developed by folks at Ruhr-Uni Bochum. It's streamlined my work with production data immensely!

@elManuBohn Came here to suggest the usual "Don't bin continuous variables" papers (eg by Royston et al) but you're probably aware of those. :) I usually vaguely refer to nonlinear or discontinuous effects, but I'd love to know about some specifically developmental work too.

@_lenaackermann @chbergma (If you wanna go Squarespace, it might be worth to see if you can snag a coupon code somewhere. Back when I got started with them in 2014ish, they would advertise heavily on podcasts, and that's how I got a free domain name.)

@_lenaackermann @chbergma While I will definitely not call myself a cool kid, I second Squarespace! They've been super helpful whenever silly me had a question about literally anything.
