Most startup advice is too romantic. I’m back in China interviewing startup founders and entrepreneurs. Yesterday, I interviewed a former Yale postdoc who returned to China and joined a biotech startup as founding member in 2019. A year later, COVID hit. They raised $1.1B in a year. The company has became a biotech unicorn valued at $4B. When I asked him what advice he would give to his younger self. He said: Evaluate all the cards you have. Not “follow your passion.” Not “take the leap.” Not “just go all in.” Your papers. Your patents. Your experience. Your timing. Your downside. Most people don’t fail because they lack courage.
