I think we need to stop using the NATO 'expanded' eastward after the Cold War ended. It didnt push East, states in east joined it enthusiastically. It would be more accurate to say it was 'invited' eastward.

@mattyglesias Area 4 was officially rebranded “The Port” by the Cambridge City Council in 2015, but I’m not sure how well that’s sticking. It’s also a bit confusing since it borders the Cambridgeport neighborhood.

@mattyglesias The Taking of Pelham One Two Three had an insane premise and zero back story. Little explanation of who the guys are or how they came together. The movie also ends with out a lot of ceremony which is another thing that isn't done much today. Plus that theme music

@patrickc One that only partially exists is the digitized newspaper collection from the Library of Congress. It gives a taste of what it could be. They have many newspapers but so much history can’t be searched yet. There at tens of thousands of old newspapers that only exist on microfilm.

Besides Wikipedia and the Internet Archive, what are the internet's finest "public goods" websites? (And are there any obvious ones that don't exist that should?)

The @internetarchive is such an incredible treasure. Yesterday, used it to check something on Stripe's first homepage. Today, successfully found an issue of the Atlantic from 1880 that @TheAtlantic's site lacks. Thank you, @brewster_kahle!

@DavidWondrich Ok, that agrees with what I saw. Even though his address shifts a bit, I checked deeds & saw references to street renumbering. He may have always been at the same location which looks to be corner of Anthony & Little Water at entrance to Cow Bay. I appreciate your checking.

@xefer Going back to the city directory snippets I kept, I see that it is indeed James L. Dean, and that Mary Ann Dean is a false lead. Still trying to remember where I got the internal description from.

@DavidWondrich Hi, I believe you had written about the old tavern “James Dean’s Porterhouse” in Five Points. I know it was a real place. Was your text based on actual information or was it more for artistic effect? Yours is the only info I’ve found outside of old city directories

@DavidWondrich He's in directories through he 1840s at Little Water St. By 1850 he is living with woman 20 years his junior. No more details after 1855. My guy returns to MA in 1860 and dies within a year. Seems awfully coincidental. Fin.

@DavidWondrich Guy with exact same name first appears in Five Points with porterhouse in 1834/5. In 1840 census this guy is in a household in Five Points as only male with 5 women in their 20s

@DavidWondrich I have an ancestor, James L Dean, who left Massachusetts ~1833 for NYC. His years in NYC align with NYC directory entries like: “Dean James L, porterhouse, 9 Little Water”. Can’t be certain if it’s same person and looking for any info at all. Appreciate anything you could share.
