@500Birds @nyclovesnyc @bryantparknyc @wildbirdfund They were closed, as it was evening. I went to that place on East 116th Street. It was a long bike ride with the bird hanging in a shopping bag off the handle of the bike. But we made it.

New Yorkers and tourists are flocking to Bryant Park to get a glimpse of New York City’s hottest bird this spring, the American Woodcock. These elusive, well-camouflaged birds pause during their migration to forage for earthworms, presenting a unique urban birding opportunity.

@nyclovesnyc @bryantparknyc I once found a woodcock walking down 57th St. It had an injured wing. So I caught it and put it in a wastepaper basket and took it up to the animal rescue folks. "You did the right thing," the rescue guy said. "You saved this bird's life." I cried!

I love that the bryant park woodcocks are going viral because there are few creatures that combine magic and idiocy so well but it bears mentioning that a lot of the birds don't make it out of the park alive. Each of these dots represents a woodcock killed by a window strike.
