@87lbofbees

When a man looks up with reverence to lofty mountain peaks his heart soars.

@ContraPoints Gender and sexuality are mostly just products of conditioning, convention, the environment, etc. and it’s all a choice unless you believe you have no agency. This person is torturing his mom willingly based on concepts that have existed for like 40 years

I wonder if many kids still go to "old school" summer camps. You know, the kind where you bunk in a cabin with no electricity or A/C, showers and toilets are communal and "campground grade" etc. I feel like many today would crash right out if sent there.

@General_JWJ Public transport, friend pickup, hitchhiking in the area is usually pretty safe too. You don’t have to wait long for another hiker heading to your trailhead to pick you up

@87lbofbees That looks absolutely insane, wow. i'd love to do a trail like that one day. How do you deal with the logistics of ending your journey hundreds of miles from the start point? Do you get someone to come pick you up? Public transport? Do you have to go back for your car?

@87lbofbees I feel like this is all because both sides feel the same general dissatisfaction that things should be better than they are and are taking it out on each other in a rather undignified fashion

If you're an American public land enjoyer and you're pissed off by the euros you should actually take a moment to listen to them. I love what he have here with our public lands but we can learn a lot from euros. the strengths of both cultures can build on each other

Time for me to get in on the US vs Europe outdoor fight. I grew up in Finland and moved to Central Virginia about 10 years ago so here is ny generalized perspective. In the US, nature is something you ”go to”. You go to to a State Park, the beach, a hiking path etc. In Finland on the other hand you kinda just ”exist” in nature, it’s all around you. The culture is completely different, yes technically there us more untouched nature in the US but it is not available to most people due to private property laws. In Finland we have the ”all mens right” which means you can hike, camp, fosh and forage on any land, private included as long as it’s not someone’s yard. The neighborhood where I am, me and my kids are the only ones doing any type of foraging, we pick berries, fruit and mushroom. No one else does it. And what else is nuts? It’s illegal to forage in Virginia State Parks, so when I go with my kids we play a game of ”Spot the Park Ranger” to keep Pappa out of jail since he has a backpack full of Chantarelles. Pic from me and my kids picking Blackberries at our local Middle School.

America has arguable the best scenery in the world but it's completely wasted on people who take their Air Controlled car to the beach, invented the climate controlled fishing hut and need a climate controlled luxury deer blind for hunting. Outdoor sports and hobbies are just as popular in Europe on the average and more popular in the Nordics but Americans spend more money on outdoor sports because if they aren't comfortable they aren't going. It's like the meme with the wolf who is fed by stone age people and end up as a pug. Europe sent the best and most adventurous of their people to America and now they won't step outside if its +26°C. Except for my American mutuals and followers of course.

@Empty_America I talked to one of these guys for like 20 minutes while I was resting in a town during my colorado trail hike. We had like zero understanding of each others points of view which for some reason kept it going

@87lbofbees @smart_money13 You probably didn't do it In the high sierra with limited food over hundreds of dollars of expensive gear. If you have vomited for attention at any point, you are pathetic and retarded

So many replies to this are essentially “she’s faking it, she could never do this” Please listen to me: Thru hiking on the PCT or AT is basically adult daycare. It’s a highly regulated environment and you are rarely alone. If you are daunted by the idea of these hikes you are frankly a pathetic baby

I firmly believe hormonal birth control makes women do braindead stuff like hiking alone from Mexico to Canada. Research shows the pill shrinks the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which is involved in fear processing and emotional regulation.

@87lbofbees @smart_money13 She vomited all over her gear inside her tent and other hikers helped clean it up. Highly doubt this was intentional

I’ve done this drive maybe 20 times, and used to think this very thing. Around the 6th time I was driving north of Oakley Kansas and saw the setting of the sun against the rising of the moon at dusk and was overwhelmed by the beauty. I thought of this line from Blood Meridian (of all things): “The jagged mountains were pure blue in the dawn and everywhere birds twittered and the sun when it rose caught the moon in the west so that they lay opposed to each other across the earth, the sun whitehot and the moon a pale replica, as if they were the ends of a common bore beyond whose terminal burned worlds past all reckoning” I’ve since come to realize that there is not a speck of dust on this earth that is not glorious and beautiful, and that all things denote there is a God in heaven.
