As the Jewish state, Israel cherishes and upholds the Jewish values of tolerance and mutual respect between Jews and worshippers of all faiths. All religions flourish in our land and we view members of all faiths as equals in building our society and region. Yesterday, like the overwhelming majority of Israelis, I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon. I condemn the act in the strongest terms. Military authorities are conducting a criminal probe of the matter and will take appropriately harsh disciplinary action against the offender. While Christians are being slaughtered in Syria and Lebanon by Muslims, the Christian population in Israel thrives unlike elsewhere in the Middle East. Israel is the only country in the region that the Christian population and standard of living is growing. Israel is the only place in the Middle East that adheres to freedom of worship for all. We express regret for the incident and for any hurt this has caused to believers in Lebanon and around the world.

I am not sure whether the image of an IDF soldier destroying a statue of Jesus in Lebanon is real or AI, but I have some thoughts: - What does it matter if a religious Jewish soldier, who believes he is commanded by God in the Bible to destroy idols, did so, while Christians in Israel enjoy full rights, including Jews who convert to Christianity? Why is the action of one Israeli soldier framed as representing Israel as a whole? - I am Protestant, and I know many Protestants who would want to go out and destroy what they consider idols in Catholic churches. I have even known Protestants who have done that. - When Muslims destroy statues of Jesus or the Virgin Mary and we criticize it, our criticism is meant to show how Christians are not treated with equal rights in Islamic countries, not to highlight isolated actions of individuals. - Jews do not believe Jesus is God, and having statues of a crucified God is considered an abomination. A Jew who discards a Christian statue believe he is acting in obedience to the first and second commandments, something many evangelicals also affirm. So why is it such a big deal if this act does not reflect how Christians actually live in Israel? - Lebanese Maronites have statues all over the country, yet they have not been able to determine their own destiny, due to their partnership in ruling Lebanon with Muslim who keep dragging the country into crises every decade over Islamic causes. What have they ultimately gained from those statues?
