@JamesMelville Imagine your working day daily drive currently takes 3½ hrs and that is going to take 7 hrs, figures based on ideal traffic conditions no roadworks, closures, etc, not only is the productivity going to take a nosedive, but the need for chiropractors will boom

“Thousands of Brits have backed a call to halve the national speed limit from 60mph to 30mph on single carriageway roads.” This is absolutely ridiculous for so many different reasons.

@jacobmparis When I had mine I used to receive paper statement, but as i was living in a different country (snail mail) to where my card was issued, I would post a cheque for an amount that I knew would cover the billed amount. Never paid any interest to Amex in 38yrs

So I just got my first Amex, can anyone confirm whether it’s normal that they don’t allow me to pay off the card before it starts bearing interest?? Because if so I’m canceling this thing asap

@JohnSimpsonNews Who gives a fuck what the brits and the rest of Europe think about president trump? I sure as hell don’t. They created this mess and have refused to help, so fuck them. As far as unease goes, not a single one of them have been in on the strategy meetings, so fuck them.

I’m detecting more and more unease in the US and Europe about Pres Trump’s bewildering conduct in the war with Iran. ‘He doesn’t seem to have any idea how to get out of the trap Iran has set for him,’ says one US ex-diplomat.

This might be hard to believe, but In Japan, you can pay your taxes at a convenience store. Your electric bill. Your gas bill. Your water bill. At 3 a.m. if you want. Pick up concert tickets. Print documents. Send packages. Withdraw cash. Buy a dress shirt if you forgot yours. Hot fried chicken. Fresh coffee. A full meal for five dollars. Over 56,000 stores across Japan. Most of them never close. Not for holidays. Not for snow. They even have a name for what they are. "Konbini." It means: a second home that happens to sell snacks.

@interceptours I remember the ฿500 being collected when you handed your ticket and passport over at the check in desk, and then later changed to paying at the booth

25 years ago you had to pay to leave Thailand. You would go to a booth at Don Mueang Airport and pay 500thb in cash, receive a ticket, which was punched on exit to immigration so it could not be reused. It went up to 700thb before it was integrated into your flight cost as a tax.

@Steve0166764812 @jesperbkk I also had this at few years ago, both were under BOI, one was a rep office, I decided at some point to switch from the rep office paying me, to the Thai company paying me, but my visa was based on the rep office paying me, = 200+ day overstay when I went to renew

Saw this job posted on LinkedIn and it kept me wondering how anyone that is native speaking Danish, can have no need for visa sponsoring in Thailand and apply for this job? The only native speaking Danish people I know is Danish and therefore cannot work legally in Thailand without a work permit.

In Japan, taxi doors open by themselves. No, really. The driver pulls a lever and the back door swings open for you. It started with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics — cab companies added auto-doors to welcome foreign visitors. The Olympics happened once. The doors never stopped.

I lived in Japan for a year. Most of my experiences were exhausting in ways I’d rather not get into, but this one still makes me laugh. I was on the train in Osaka, minding my own business, when I noticed a group of school kids a few seats down. They were whispering, glancing at me, then whispering again. They kept passing a folded piece of paper between them as if they were planning something top secret. I watched this go on for two stops. Finally, one of the kids was pushed forward by the others. He walked over to me slowly, like he was approaching a wild animal that might bite. He stopped right in front of me, bowed politely, and held out the folded paper with both hands. I opened it. Inside was a handwritten note in careful English: “Hello. We think you are a very cool person. We are practicing our English. We hope this note is correct. Please give us a score.” At the bottom, they had drawn a literal grading box, out of ten. I looked up. Seven pairs of eyes were staring at me as if their entire semester depended on my response. I pulled out a pen, wrote “10/10” in the box, and added a note: “Perfect English. Well done.” The boy carried it back to the group. They read it together… and absolutely lost their minds. High-fives, jumping, and one kid even pumped his fist in the air. Their teacher, who had been pretending not to watch from the end of the car, was biting her lip, trying hard not to smile. I rode the rest of the journey grinning to myself. That’s the Japan I always remember.

People say there's nothing affordable out there. £55,000. Perfect starter home. We can put you in touch with our handyman Dave. One bucket of paint and it'll look better than most of our rentals. Get on the ladder early. Nobody's stopping you but matcha. 🇬🇧

@tanpukunokami Thanks for sharing, now I understand why everytime I saw the groups of schoolkids walking close to the schools, (always very orderly) the youngest were all sporting those huge backpacks

In Japan, every elementary school kid carries the same backpack. It's called a randoseru. Hard leather. Box-shaped. Rigid for 6 years. It costs $400 on average. $700 for the nicer ones. Grandparents buy it as a gift for the first day of school. It takes 40 hours to assemble, by hand, with 200 parts. The design hasn't changed since 1887. The kid uses it every single day. From age 6 to 12. By age 12, it's scratched, worn, beaten up. Some families have it miniaturized into a keepsake. Some pass it down to younger siblings. Some keep it forever, in a closet, untouched. Japan turned a backpack into a 6-year ceremony.

@KnoydartTearoom Back in 1999 an old aunt 89yrs old at the time, told me to come to her home and she'd show me how to make it, I wrote down the recipe and a few years ago typed It up to send to my siblings, no point in their kids having perfect teeth and missing out on tablet

@Tigam__ @TrumpGirlOnFire I think in Malaysia they wouldn't sell their 50% subsidized fuel to vehicles from neighbor countries at the same subsidized price they sell to their own country vehicles.

@TrumpGirlOnFire He's right about a whole lot of stuff. Wrong on "you have to pay the global market price"... If you buy gas in Iran, it costs $1.36 per gallon. If your country produces it, you can charge whatever you want. They just don't do it for other countries.

I like this guy. Someone asked him "If the US produces so much oil, why is gas so expensive?" He explains everything well and seems quite intelligent. Hear him out regarding oil prices.
