The people drowning in email aren't lazy. They're just using a tool that was designed in 1971. Email was built to send messages. Not to manage relationships. Not to track commitments. Not to hold the context of an entire organisation. We've added AI to it. We've built better inboxes. We've created smarter filters. But we're still asking a 1971 tool to do a 2026 job. The problem was never efficiency. Its that the tool has become infrastructure. A new layer on top is needed.

I send way too many exclamation marks when I’m emailing customers, vendors, and patients. I have to go through and decide which sentences get downgraded to a period 😅

kinda incredible how emails sit ignored for days, but dms get answered in seconds even from super important peeps. email has become this pseudo formal, low priority inbox where stuff goes to die. dms tap into the dopamine loop, feels urgent, personal, & unignorable. i now actively avoid email unless it’s a last resort.

@tferriss Tim, this is so true. One glance can hijack a whole day. I’ve started treating email like a physical inbox – only open it when I’m ready to process, not just peek.

As tempting as it is to “just check e-mail for one minute,” don't do it. I know from experience that any problem found in the inbox will linger in the brain for hours or days after you shut down the computer, rendering “free time” useless with preoccupation. It’s the worst of states, where you experience neither relaxation nor productivity. Be focused on work or focused on something else, never in-between.

Email is almost entirely dead as a channel to get a busy persons attention DM, iMessage, Whatsapp or you likely won’t hear back and it’s not personal

Academics telling me about worsening administrative bloat- a cycle of administrators making new rules and procedures with more administrators needed to implement and enforce these new systems. One friend characterized it as a university wide autoimmune disease- administrators are the once helpful immune cells now attacking healthy tissue and gumming up the works.

Office and admin being overwhelmed is not surprising, though I'm not afraid of computers and math. I've built incredible leverage, allowing me to do much more with good tooling. The expansion of capabilities for these models just makes my work more high leverage.
