Literally not true. I remember being in middle school in 2011 and if you talked about anime that wasn't Dragonball or games that weren't COD and 2K/Madden you got made fun of. I legit had a random come up to me and my friends and call us weird because we talked about Skyrim and Naruto. We weren't even the "Naruto running down the hallway" types, we just stood around as a group of friends talking. This happened pretty often too.

Pokémon fans are allergic to fun I swear to god because what's wrong with a character having accessories that resembles a pokemon? And, what's so bad if a character loves their pokemon so much they'd like to incorporate their traits into their fashion?

@funnygamedev There's honestly only so many low poly pastel colored styled games i can take and that limit was hit many many years ago.

this game is a great example of how a lack of good art direction can make a game just not seem appealing even if it's functionally 1 to 1 to what people like

@TheTrueVanguard It doesn't matter how much you improve on on-boarding the game simply is too hardcore so the vast majority won't stay. They made a mistake using such a large budget for a niche game, they have a choice of keep going as is and gamble on gaining traction or going for mass appeal.

Marathon is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's an incredibly good game, but the more casual audience seems to be avoiding it. But if they dumb the game down, it will be considerably worse and I'll likely stop playing it. It's basically a phenomenal game that doesn't appeal, I guess, to a wider audience. I'm not sure what exactly the solution is, maybe it's better strategic marketing and creative efforts to onboard new players. I'm not sure. But dumbing the game down would likely fix nothing. You might get new players to temporarily try it, but then they're playing a considerably less inspired game and will bounce off it. I also think the truly bizarre pre-launch hate campaign was SUPER weird. Like, gamers can be such strange people and I say that with peace and love. But I'm not sure I've ever seen a global predisposition to hate a game the way I saw it with Marathon. People were literally parroting the exact same sentences for months, almost like they had talking points and were collectively regurgitating them. Like the places where gamers hang out (YT, Reddit, Twitch, X, etc) had posts or something hating the game that circulated so much that people just latched onto them. I dunno. Either way, it didn't do the game any favors. I'm not sure what the best path forward is but good marketing and a positive outward image might help. And the vault wipes are definitely a good thing, that's totally necessary. But I think diluting the game to make it more palatable is the wrong play personally. Short term gain maybe, but over time will actually hurt retention I think.

@Lewchube I still replay Crystal over any other gen 2 games, i just like it as a whole.

Discarding literally everything Pokemon GSC has to offer because a good remake exists is genuinely a depressing way to engage with games as art. Crystal alone has the most well-animated sprites in the series.

ORAS straight up replace Ruby and Sapphire Like yeah they’re a little easier but the amount of content they add along with the online features that existed, there is MUCH more depth and life in those games

@yano_gamedev If it was a standalone game sure, but as a remake it was incredibly low effort. Just copy and paste ignoring most of platinums improvements, down to the bugs; Just felt soul-less compared to older remakes.

Ok, I need you to be honest... We were a little too hard on this game when it came out? Diamond and Pearl was great, and honestly, looking at this game now, the art style is pretty cute and polished. Maybe not as good a remake as ORAS for its price, but respectable... or no?

@LukeCB14 Yeah, but let's not pretend Lightfall didn't start the downward spiral. The hype for Lightfall was massive and it was so bad which damaged the games rep and trust massively. Only redeeming point was strand.
