Calling this “leftist” misses the point. If being a classical liberal is leftist, then I wonder what you consider “conservative”… Banning certain foods in SNAP is just more government micromanagement layered onto a broken system. The real problem is the SNAP and broader welfare system—too much spending, too many people stuck on it, and too little incentive to move off it. Most economists prefer cash over in-kind benefits for a reason: fewer distortions, less bureaucracy, and more respect for individual choice. If the goal is helping people prosper, why double down on a system that keeps them dependent? This isn’t left vs. right—it’s control vs. freedom. Telling people what they can buy with SNAP doesn’t fix poverty. It expands bureaucracy and assumes government knows better than individuals. The real reform is smaller government, less welfare dependence, and policies that make work and upward mobility the better option. Do we want people to prosper—or just manage them better inside a broken system? I choose the former.

This is a stunningly bad & laughable take against a key aspect of President Trump’s MAHA agenda. It’s not “paternalistic” to ensure taxpayer dollars aren’t being used to subsidize sickness. Junk food bans are a commonsense & conservative measure to put nutrition back in SNAP.

Honored to receive the endorsement of @ilhanmn — one of the bravest voices in politics and an unwavering champion for working people. The movement to create permanent affordability is growing, and national progressives are taking notice. The Midwest is leading the way.
