I think snow days in Chicago schools are among the most medieval of institutions: lords have total authority over the peasants, but by ancient tradition, authority is suspended in the face of the snow. A lord who usurped the snow day would be judged by God and man to be no lord.

@FreddyFreakout1 Exactly what I was alluding to. They work for Ryanair, but it's an old wives' tale that it "saves the airline millions of dollars every year". People forget that it costs more to install, carrying the extra weight, extra maintenance costs, time wasting when they don't work, etc.

Another old wives’ tale that when repeated enough becomes a truth! The actual purpose is it allows operation to airfields without air stairs or enough air stairs, particularly short season holiday destinations.
