Alawite State (1920-1936) The alawite state was created by the French in 1920 during the French Mandate. It was created as a safe haven for Alawites. The Capital city was Latakia. Alawite Revolt of 1919–1921 Saleh al-Ali rebelled against the French presence from 1919 to 1921 and allied himself with the Syrian Arab nationalists. The Majority of alawites did not oppose the Alawite State. Many Alawites viewed the French presence as protection from the Sunni-dominated Arab nationalist movements. However, these petitions did not reflect universal consensus, and Alawites ultimately became a recognized community within the Syrian state 1946: Syria achieves full independence.
