Anna Vero Wendland@VeroWendland

@AdAstra_2024 it’s just “I don’t like the guy, therefore the number is fake. And the AI snark? Cute deflection. Read the actual AFRY report instead of hunting for gotchas on one citation. That’s not critique — that’s cope.

@AdAstra_2024 Yes, Sovacool has been criticised. But pointing at one author’s past doesn’t erase a dataset of 662 projects. If the stat is wrong, show the better global overrun analysis. Otherwise

🇫🇮Finland/ Finnish options for new nuclear capacity 🚨 New AFRY study outlines Finland’s Nuclear Future: Extensions win on cost, SMRs for heat show strong potential, new large reactors need major state support. Adding 2.4 GW could cut wholesale prices by €5–7/MWh long-term.

@AdAstra_2024 Do what ever suits you. Have to go now anyway, I have an oppointment. Please direct your criticism to the authors of the study or to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The contact information is available

@AnStra14 Again: Are you using AI for (some of) your answers? I am not interested in chatting with a bot which completely ignores my critique concerning the quality of the cited publication or its author concerning the topic of nuclear power.

@AdAstra_2024 AFRY therefore used the study appropriately and sparingly as a general reference to historical construction risks—not as a basis for its own cost estimates or recommendations. AFRY’s own analyses are based primarily on actual European project data and not on this study.

@AdAstra_2024 No, I have no problem wth it bc AFRY cited it once and only as a general risk indicator. There is no problem with that, period. AFRY didn’t exclude the APR-1400. This Finland-specific study focuses only on reactor designs 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 licensable 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲.

@AnStra14 It is honestly weird and uncharacteristic that you see no problem at all with AFRY's exclusion of 1 possible conventional reactor type and the usage of (very likely misleading) data from an anti-nuclear adcovate.

@AdAstra_2024 Again are we talking about the same study? AFRY did cite exactly this 2025 study by Sovacool & Ryu: Sovacool & Ryu (2025) — "Beyond economies of scale: Learning from construction cost overrun risks and time delays in global energy infrastructure projects" #citing-papers" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">semanticscholar.org/paper/Beyond-e…

@AnStra14 Again, why would they cite exclusively this guy (who even had to retract a publication) concerning the costs of historical NPP? #Publications" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_… Why not mention any other publication about the real, measured cost of nuclear builds? (Also: Are you using AI for answers?)

@AdAstra_2024 The Ministry specifically commissioned them for this study precisely because of their deep expertise in Finland’s energy system and nuclear sector. If you have questions about their methodology, citations, or assumptions, the best place is to contact AFRY or the Ministry directly

@AdAstra_2024 Again what's your problem. AFRY cited Sovacool & Ryu (2025) once, and only for a narrow, factual statistic: the historical average cost overrun across a large global dataset of energy projects (including nuclear). The citation is not used for base costs, LCOE, or conclusions.

@AdAstra_2024 AFRY cites Sovacool & Ryu (2025) only for historical +103% cost overrun risk stats from their dataset of 662 global projects — accurate for what it is not for base costs or CO₂. They 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 use his outdated 2008 65 gCO₂/kWh mean (modern median is ~12 g)

@AdAstra_2024 Keep in mind this is a Finland-specific study. It only considers reactor designs that are realistically licensable today under Finland’s strict STUK regulation and EU rules.

@AdAstra_2024 It focuses on designs realistic under STUK regulation + recent European experience (EPR, AP1000, OL3). APR-1400 (Korean) isn’t yet EU-licensed for Finland.

@AnStra14 Why do they exclude the Southkorean APR-1400/1000 which is getting built in the Czech Republic? According to Sovacool the historical cost overrun of all nuclear reactors is +103%, a number which is as highly questionable as his mean Lifecycle-CO2 of 65 grams per kWh for nuclear.
