On the $50 fuel shock payments: This isn’t meant to pay for fuel consumption completely it’s meant to cover the extra cost of the spike. At $3.40 vs $2.40, for example, 91 petrol is $1 more per litre. For a 45L tank, that’s $45 extra per fill so $50/week covers one full tank’s increase. However Ministry of Transport says the average driver only uses about 15L/week so most people aren’t filling a full tank every week. This isn’t a universal cost-of-living payment. It’s targeted at unavoidable commuting costs.
