An example of a bright politician whose energy level was off the charts, and who used that light-of-a-thousand-suns level of energy to amplify his intellectual talents, was Theodore Roosevelt. TR was clearly super bright, but there's no evidence he could engage in difficult intellectual work, which was unlike Jefferson or Ben Franklin or JQA or even James Garfield. But Teddy's energy level was so high and so directly engaged with reading, writing and light scientific field work, that he was able to converse fluently with experts on dozens of different topics - perhaps even more than Jefferson or Franklin. If I had to guess - and a wild-ass guess is all this is - I would say that TR's intelligence was ~2 SDs above the median, but his energy level was ~4 SDs above the median. Obama's were more like 2 and 1.

I think Obama is fairly bright for an American politician, but the irony is that he shows little evidence of it beyond the mundane because he's not a high-energy person. He didn't go deeply into any area of scholarship or the law, and even his reading that the public has caught glimpses of shows he prefers light modern literature to anything that might challenge his assumptions. He's a good example of why one needs more than a moderately high IQ to achieve any intellectual accomplishments.

I’ll put my hands up and say that I was wrong in the way I covered Southampton, and I definitely needed to be more cautious in how I reported on events. Knowing what I know now, I would have approached the situation completely differently. Going forward, I will either blur faces of patriots or attend protests without filming at all.
