In the 2010s, there was a bit of a power struggle within "the Left" between a faction of (mostly) older straight white male orthodox Marxists, who read big tomes on "political economy" and "theory," and a faction of (mostly) younger women who were into Internet-centric feminism and CRT stuff ("idpol"). The men were decisively routed during MeToo, when it emerged that some of them had been using their "power" as mid-tier academics and small magazine editors to sleep with the young women.

NYC observations after spending last week there • people are actually outside touching grass (or cement 😅) • very few AI ads or billboards around • even cafes i went to - very few screens with claude code or cursor or some coding tool • people are way more open to socializing. everyone is willing to strike up a conversation (not about AI agents) • the energy is electric - everyone’s moving with purpose. • found a way to talk to folks without mentioning AI • way more artists, and non traditional creators. Met an actual physical product designer which was cool. it’s genuinely refreshing to remember there’s a whole world outside the feed been traveling the last few days and the SF tech bubble makes it easy to forget how alive real cities feel. sorry SF, you’re still home… but perspective is healthy 🤷‍♂️

@Mmmm_nuh_uh @PalmyrPar plenty do. i think a lot of STEM people(i would include myself) buy in to neoclassical economics/explanations that rely on empirical data about individual incentives and institutional dynamics rather than sweeping grand historical/“scientific” theories

Francis Fukuyama is a fucking idiot and a charlatan. People aren’t struggling against ‘liberal democracy’ out of boredom because it’s too peaceful and prosperous. The third world wants to burn it all down out of bloodlust for centuries of conquest, colonization, and humiliation. And the first world is going through the largest invasion in history. Fukuyama’s “steak too juicy, lobster too buttery” view of liberal democracy and its critics only applies to rich first world Marxists.
