@LostLoreScholar @astrohaus @getfreewrite They're well worth the investment; you won't regret setting money aside to purchase one in the future. My Traveler stays in the bag I take everywhere, so I always have my drafts at hand for the strike of inspiration, or an unexpected 15 minutes of free time. -Alan

@EricKentEdstrom Glad you're already enjoying it! FYI, you can change font sizes directly on Traveler and Smart Typewriter by long pressing the power button to access the main menu :)

Freewrite Alpha Review I am a sucker for any device meant for writing. This ranges from fountain pens to manual typewriters to specialized writing devices like the @astrohaus Freewrite Alpha. After a long, impatient wait, my Alpha finally arrived yesterday. Here are my first impressions. - The price is $349, though I paid $249 during the Indiegogo launch. - Attractive, polished design. - Sturdy yet lightweight. - The square keys were a . . . choice. They take some getting used to. - LCD display is fast, but can be hard to read in dim light. The display not backlit. - There are no dedicated arrow keys. (But there are arrow keys, more later) - $50 felt slip case is nice. Alpha advantages vs other Freewrites: 1) You can change the display's font size through a menu accessible on the device. The other Freewrite models require you to go to a website and change the configuration. 2) Zero typing lag due to the LCD display. The other models use e-ink displays, which have slow refresh rates. Alpha vs Alphasmart Neo: Alphasmart (long discontinued) was intended for students but has found a fanbase among writers who love the distraction-free platform combined with long battery life. In any online discussion about the merits of a Freewrite, someone will immediately bring up the relatively cheap Alphasmart. The Alpha is prettier than the Alphasmart. The keys feel better than the Alphasmart's, but the slightly large square shape of the keycaps take some getting used to. They look neat, but I'm not as accurate on them. To be fair, I've only had the device for one day. The keys do have a nice click to them. The Alpha's display is quick, as you'd expect with an LCD. But the Alphasmart had a slight forward cant to the display which made it easier to see when typing on your lap. It also had more font size choices and a taller LCD display. The Freewrite Alpha has a better font. The popular Alphasmart Neo has onboard text search, find/replace, spell check, thesaurus, LCD contrast settings, and lovely, dedicated arrow keys. Freewrite Alpha stays true to its minimalist philosophy by not having those features. ;) The Alpha's WASD keys do have arrows on them and they work fine in combination with the NEW key and NEW+Shift to move the cursor around your document. WASD works, but . . . every time I use the feature I know that some sad Astrohaus engineer is shedding a tear of dismay into his espresso. A backlit LCD would have been an awesome improvement over the Alphasmart, but maybe cost, aesthetics, or battery life concerns won out. I prefer to write in dim settings, so I clamped a book light to the device and it worked fine. Document Handling—Postbox: All Freewrite devices will automatically, and pretty much instantly, backup your document to a free cloud-based portal called Postbox. From there you can download txt and PDF versions, or send them to the big cloud storage services like Dropbox. They offer a subscription Freewrite Pro that gives a few more capabilities, but I have not looked into it at all. Files are saved onboard as .txt and can be directly copied to a computer with the included USB-C to USB-C cord. Should you buy it? It's a specialized writing device. If you are attracted to the idea of it, you'll probably enjoy using it. While the Alpha does give writers a more affordable Freewrite option among a pricey range, I might consider saving up another $150 for the Traveler if you're sold on the Freewrite concept. But if that's too much of a stretch for a dedicated writing device, the Alpha is a fine choice. If the $349 price tag still makes your eyelids twitch, the Alphasmart Neo sells for $50 to $100 on eBay these days. It has no cloud connection, no company supporting it, and you transfer documents by connecting it to your computer and watching it "type" the text into your favorite text app. It works, but it's slow for longer documents. I have not written entire novels with any Alphasmart (I have three variations) or Freewrite product (I own one of each model). I do occasionally write chapters with them when I just feel like I need a change of pace, environment, or pattern to kindle my creativity. I've written 16 novels so far (which you should read), some dictated, one entirely on manual typewriters, most in Scrivener. All these devices will work if you show up. But if writing on your laptop or iPad results in you suddenly scrolling through X or Facebook or 'doing research,' then a distraction-free device like Freewrite might just free your writing.

@thecosmiccomet Hi, Jay. The refresh rate is a feature of E Ink, but most writers find it doesn't bother them and it even helps get in writing flow. For those who it does bother, however, we have a new device coming out with an instant-refresh LCD screen: getfreewrite.com/products/alpha

@astrohaus Please, fix the refresh rate for the next generation of writers. They cause more distraction than they hope to fix and I can’t justify the price if it takes two seconds for a character to appear on screen.

@astrohaus is there any chance I could ‘test drive’ one, or trade in my Gen 1 for an upgrade? 😂

Does anyone have a Gen 3 @astrohaus Freewrite? I have had a Gen 1 for a few years, and am wondering if it is worth the upgrade.

I have had a freewrite traveler @astrohaus for years. So, for those who are thinking of getting one...I'd advise against it. Great for distraction free writing *if* they save your document and *If* an update doesn't brick the machine.

@SamanthaBondy1 We ONLY ship new product to Amazon. The problem is that they are sending out return units as new. Unfortunately you aren’t the only one and just last week changed our return settings so that all Amazon returns have to come back to us first.

@astrohaus You had such potential. I’d like to know why you’re fraudulently advertising used products as “new” and selling them for over retail price on sites like Amazon.
