As expected, BidzCoin—a cryptocurrency aggressively promoted by a Rudaw TV economic presenter—has now collapsed, taking millions of $ from people’s money with it. From the outset, we identified it as a Ponzi scheme: It has since emerged that the presenter was one of six individuals behind the coin. The coin is reportedly the creation of a Kurdish individual originally from Duhok but currently residing in the United States. However, in today’s market, launching a cryptocurrency requires little to no technical expertise—making it an ideal tool for exploiting the gullible. It remains unclear why Rudaw allowed its presenter to promote the coin so extensively on its platform. What is clear, however, is the scale of the damage: an estimated $50 million has been siphoned from investors, the vast majority of them from Duhok.

It's the latest in a string of Ponzi schemes ruthlessly exploiting gullible individuals seeking quick profits. Rudaw's aggressive promotion of this illegitimate and globally unrecognized cryptocurrency raises alarming questions about their direct involvement in the scam. This case goes beyond mere regulatory failure or corruption; it represents a blatant and potentially criminal abuse of media influence to defraud the public. The willingness of a major media outlet to actively promote such a scheme underscores a severe ethical crisis and a dangerous disregard for journalistic integrity and public welfare in the region.
