What is this "fight' about? Err, the government takes more per litre in tax to pay for public services to the farmers, agri contractors, hauliers and their familiies - who are disrupting the lives of other citizens with their selfish behaviour. Build, and not destroy.

I also respectfully disagree with Ray. The Irish government knows that, leaving aside the outcome of a vote in NI, in the Republic there are many who would not vote for a UI if it meant importing a violent minority into our country which would have to be contained by our security forces. Hopefully the British government and people will soon vote to rejoin the EU and an island-wide shared sense of being European (always John Hume's vision) will result in an Agreed Ireland supported by large majorities North and South. Meanwhile, let's keep engaging in community-wide conversations along the lines encouraged by Sam McBride and Fintan O'Toole in For and Against a United Ireland, and also by Prof Brendan O' Leary in Making Sense of a United Ireland. In any preparation for change there has to be a sense of give and take and those most in favor of a UI should be reaching out to the middle ground in NI and not just playing to their base.

This is a point I have made repeatedly during my guest lectures in the United States, usually to the surprise of those in the audience. The Irish government is failing in its duty to prepare the people of Ireland for a referendum.
