Hey comrades! Today's popcorn classic is objectively one of the greatest films ever made, as it boasts a runtime of 422 minutes! It's Sergey Bondarchuk's legendary Mosfilm produced adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace!

@ndsnas I have been meaning to pick up their bluray of Bondarchuk's War and Peace for a while now but it was already on backorder when I checked the sale 😒. I would feel accomplished getting that for 30 big Canadian dollars considering it is like 7 hours long, haha.

@BoothsRiley That’s exactly what I’d do if I could. But I do want to buy at least one film I like haha. I’ve only been here in Canada for two years so I try not to buy anything until I know I have some roots here. Ah well!

I can’t make use of the Criterion flash sale because I live in Canada and will be hit with tariffs, very cool.

@ndsnas I spend almost all my disposable income on movies and books and I will never buy these full price - I also try to get people to buy them for me as gifts on birthdays and Christmas if at all possible, lol.

@ndsnas It's also already over, but yeah once they sell out their existing stock they go on back order and revert to their normal price so you have to get in as early as possible. For next time, anyway!

@BoothsRiley Ahhh thank you! It’s a shame that they don’t seem to have the 50% off here. They do on some titles but not all :(

@ndsnas The problem is that they have limited stock sometimes certain titles immediately go into backorder and aren't included in the sale, but otherwise it's a good way around that problem.

@ndsnas Were you aware that Unobstructed View is the official Criterion distributor for Canada (meaning they host the big sales events) and they ship from Canada? unobstructedview.com

@HistorianDiary "This book debunks a deliberate misrepresentation of the Marxist concept of revolution and consciousness for liberals who don't know any better so they can reinforce their ideologically motivated ignorance of theory and history."

I have started reading this book, which explores the idea of revolution and how it has evolved over time. It challenges the Marxist argument that revolutions are mainly driven by economic constraints. Often times ideas themselves trigger revolutions. Also because throughout the history, economic crises have not always led to revolutionary change. And even when revolutions occur, they do not necessarily change the underlying class conflict, that is, societies have consistently been characterized by a very small circle of wealthy elite and a large populations of poor individuals.
Duygu Yıldırım@HistorianDiary

I am really into the “history of an idea” genre, so I’m curious about this one.

Who could have predicted that PPE masks would have been needed among other essential medical supplies!? Obviously nobody who was a part of this 'leftist' influencer Cuban vacation PR event. They didn't bring any because masks interfere with instagram profile tagging detection.
James🔻@GoodVibePolitik

If anyone wants to help I spent a few hours talking to medical students in Havana today who work at a hospital who said they need N95s or equivalents desperately. I’ve already worked with someone to secure 5,000 masks but 40,000 supplies their entire hospital staff for a year.

@onlineva_ Actually, there were at least two rancid opinions since he got dragged for endorsing and riding for the obvious opportunist grifter Ziohran - the last thing I remember him going viral for was calling people with Tourette's-Coprolalia white nationalists lol.

@BolshevikBeyond I don't think it's really a question of whether religion itself is right or wrong (whether it's capable of making accurate factual statements) but whether it serves reaction or progress in any given form. It is downstream from class in a structurally integrated sense, though.

@BolshevikBeyond Well applying that concept to Marx is anachronistic anyway. If you say that it is true in one sense and not true in another that doesn't clarify what Marx actually argued; it only clarifies which conceptual schemes best approximate it. I don't spend much time with that anymore.

I hear you - I am just trying to caution you away from the phenomenon of scattered, abstract idealist eclecticism that is such a common trap in western left theory. People often don't grasp how much that has been designed by left anti-communist academic counterinsurgency.

@primarycatdad That person is one of a whole genre of 'journalists' devoted to doing strategically bad material analysis that serves the narrative that American imperialism is invincible, never making an error or acting out of desperation, lol. I wonder what that could possibly be about. 🤷

This equates the narrow interests of a fraction of capitalists - who are now ascendent in government - with the broad interests of the entire class (and indeed, all classes). The fractious division between the capitalists is one of the signs the empire is dying
Richard Medhurst@richimedhurst

Higher oil and LNG prices benefit the US, and weaken Europe and Asia. Not sure how consolidating control of global energy is the sign of an empire in decline.

@BolshevikBeyond Consciousness is created by and recreates class position, and that position doesn't entirely determine consciousness - you are suggesting I am arguing otherwise which tells me you are just talking past me, so I will leave it here. Also religion IS epiphenomenological for Marx.

@BolshevikBeyond others not - it's only a handful of prominent industry leaders (and mostly in specific industries like tech), and doesn't tell us about how the class structurally gains and maintains power. It's fun to think about but it's barely more than tabloid fixation on personalities.

@BolshevikBeyond It is technically the exact opposite of 'concrete' in the diamat sense, but the way these people account for themselves in their fantasies doesn't really matter beyond showing us how alienated capitalist class consciousness is. Some of them might hold some of these views . . .

Good article from a comrade briefly outlining TESCREAL, its class character, the subjective social consciousness corresponding to it, and what it means for the climate. Read it if you are the least bit interested in anything I’ve been talking about as of late.
Saoirse 🏳️‍⚧️🇵🇸@MarxistHeathen

We’re not just facing climate collapse. We’re the victims of a Climate Hecatomb being conducted by our very small ruling class who are motivated by TESCREAL ideologies that express their true class interests. @MarxistHeathen/the-climate-hecatomb-3b43aad4c915" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@MarxistHeathe
