It's measurement day for iDL and EDGE at the NFL Combine! Here are the measurements for players Dennis Allen either drafted in rounds 1-3, signed as a free agent to a mid-level contract, or inherited and used in significant roles. #Bears

@ChiRuxinBGO Yeah thieneman is a guy I'd be more okay with. Just don't think he gets there

@ButkusStats Thieneman… 200+ snaps at FS 400+ snaps at SS 100+ snaps at NCB If he’s at 25 and they pass on him it better be for a stud.

Thinking this through, if I want to take a safety in the top 2 rounds, I really want to be sure they CAN do it all. I want them to cover deep, play the nickel, and thump in the box. And those players are prly more rare than we want to accept.
Quinten Krzysko@ButkusStats

This is a me problem. But I just really dislike the idea of drafting a safety in the top 2 rounds. I think there are so many guys to be found in the mid rounds, and one of the hardest positions to reliably scout.

@ButkusStats I’m not only looking at safeties right now, but I’m coming around to the idea of linebacker or corner at 25. I am 100% on board with BPA w/some weight given to positional need.

@ButkusStats Best route I think is going DB to DL. So DB and LB are probably the more premium picks

@stpalme1 Yup. DA has a history of spending notable capital on the position.

@ButkusStats Marcus Williams was a 2nd round pick for him in New Orleans and they spent free agent dollars on Malcolm Jenkins and the Honey Badger. 🤷‍♂️

@scottbrownell34 Also not speaking in absolutes here. I don't think it would be the wrong thing to do, necessarily. Just that it gives me some heartburn.

@scottbrownell34 Depends how convicted they feel about the mid tier of prospects there. We saw GB fill a starter role with multiple mid round S picks two seasons ago. Not saying it's ideal, but I trust the Bears staff to max out a mid round S more than other positions.

@stpalme1 Sure, a lot of the best are from the top two rounds. But I believe there are more really good safeties from the mid-late rounds than other positions. And I believe in DAs ability to turn a mid round guy into a good starter at the S position.

@ButkusStats Aren’t the best ones mostly from the first two rounds (Hamilton, Bates, Branch, Winfield, McKinney, Fitzpatrick, Baker)?

@TheShtuff I think the only position more difficult to scout than S is QB. Especially the deep coverage aspects of it. But that's just me. To each their own.

@ButkusStats Feel like it's pretty average in scouting difficulty. QB, CB, T, TE, WR, and K are all more difficult. Fair point on the middle round value, but this draft being what it is, I can see the appeal in taking a top 2 S than a trenches player for the sake of it.

Film is king. If a prospect's workout is better than the tape, I always go back to make sure I saw it correctly. More often than not, it's as simple as play speed vs timed speed. Football IQ & instincts factor into play speed. Timed speed is raw athleticism without thinking.
Voch Lombardi@VochLombardi

Film is king, & film should tell you how the wirkout will go. I actually take away points if your workout was way better than the film, cause why doesn’t your athleticism translate. Pimp C say if you was a cartoon character on ya last album be a cartoon character on this one too. Don’t be showing up with a mysterious 40 time we haven’t seen all year.

@tlntnswrd @ADannehy I will agree about the name drop part. That seemed like a false flag to me. But on the other points, I will say that I think trends can change when a team is suddenly in a super bowl window and picking late first round.

@ButkusStats @ADannehy I think he's off the Bears board not necessarily because he doesn't meet their thresholds rather his age combined with his injury history. Also, Poles mentioned him on Todd McShay's pod. Usually when he namedrops a current prospect somewhere that player is not a target for them.

I am not a fan of Mesidor and I do think he is pretty wildly out of the box for DA. He's sub-260 with sub-33-inch arms. I would really need to see athletic testing to consider him. I don't like that he didn't break out until he was 24 — so, like a 2nd or 3rd year NFL player.
Quinten Krzysko@ButkusStats

Truly, I'm starting to think Mesidor might be the Bears beat chance at adding an impact defender this off-season. Even if he is old and might not get any better from here. Not an exact DA fit, but I wouldn't say he's wildly out of the box, either.

@startkyIeorton It's truly hysterical. There were multiple moments where I had to double take on something KOC was saying about JJ

My team employed Jay Cutler for a decade and I still never saw a coach use as much stank to refer to their qb as when KOC made the "that 40 time he's always bragging so much about" comment. It's still on sight to this day w Nagy and Trubisky but he never did it that obviously.

@bengals_sans I think the increase of tracking data makes a lot of it moot. If a team has told him they like what they see in tracking data and on tape, why risk worsening an injury doing the 40? That's how I've reasoned it, at least.

I think it's incredibly dumb to only run 10 yards. I understand that's what's most translatable for the NFL but why are you limiting yourself? That would have been his best test! 99% of prospects are going to run 40 yards.

Not gonna lie, I'm feeling pretty down on this DT draft class. There are some clear fits, but I have questions about just how good those players are.

@PolesMustGo Possibly. My guess is they are aligning themselves to be able to pick BPA by having veteran options.

@ButkusStats i'd feel great about woods mid 2nd and halton mid 3rd. but you might have to take them much higher. thats why you cant draft for need. just take a great prospect at a high value position
