Over 20 years later...a new set of Regulations...the COMESA Competition and Consumer Protection Regulations 2025 were unveiled by Her Excellency the Secretary General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe. The COMESA Competition Commission was rebranded to 'COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission'...now called abbreviated 'Quad C'! National, regional and continental competition authorities gathered to discuss key developments in competition. The CEO CCCC, Dr Willard Mwemba, participated in high policy level dialogue on, "Making the market economy work for African Enterprises to end Hunger & Malnutrition: the Role of Competition Law & Policy". He informed the participants that in COMESA agriculture accounts for more than 32% of COMESA’s gross domestic product (GDP), provides livelihood to about 80% of the region’s labour force, accounts for about 65% of foreign exchange earnings and contributes more than 50% of raw materials to the industrial sector. The panel discussed the vision of the competition authorities in using competition law and policy to end hunger and malnutrition in Africa. #13March2026 #Webinar #WorldConsumerRightsDay2026 #safeproducts #consumerrights #consumersafety #CCCC #quadC "Consumer protection laws ensure the protection of consumers from unsafe products and provide for redress mechanisms where unsafe products cause harm to consumers", as stated by the Director Consumer at the CCCC, Mr Steven Kamukama. He delivered a presentation during the CCCC Webinar on the celebration of the World Consumer Rights Day 2026. His presentation highlighted what constitutes unsafe products and the forms of unsafe products (physical, chemical & toxic, electrical & fire, and biological). In his presentation he discussed consumer rights, a new development under the COMESA Competition and Consumer Protection Regulations 2025. These consumer rights are expressly provided in the Regulations including the prohibitions for their breach and redress mechanisms available to a consumer. He stated that the Regulations also contain an express prohibition of unfair trade practices such as the supply of unsafe products. The interventions of the CCCC in recalling unsafe products in the COMESA Region were highlighted such as the #Fordrecall #BMWrecall #KitKatrecall, among other recalls by the CCCC. #COMESA #QuadC #CCCC #COMESAMemberStates #COMESARegion #CommonMarket #consumerprotection

CCCC joined the COMESA Federation of Women in Business (COMFWB) in celebrating the International Womens Day. The Registrar of CCCC, Ms Meti Demissie Disasa, represented the CCCC in a panel discussion dedicated to the topic of, "Advancing economic inclusion through evidence based advocacy". The panel discussion discussed competition law and consumer policy as tools for creating a fair market for women in business, with a special focus on the COMESA Region. The International Womens Day was celebrated under the theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. As competition regulators undertake sensitisation of stakeholders on competition and consumer protection, one of the critical stakeholders they sensitise are universities. In Quarter 1 of 2026, Addis Ababa University students benefitted from lectures on competition and consumer protection, undertaken by the CCCC team. The CCCC team comprised of Mr Steven Kamukama, Director Consumer; Ms Kondwani Kaonga, Manager Economics Research Policy and Advocacy; and Mr Yonas Abebe, Principal Legal Officer. Awareness by competition law and consumer protection regulators to businesses is thus crucial to enhance compliance and increase awareness. During the Launch of the new Regulations of the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission ("Quad C") on 25 February 2026, the businesses also weighed in on the discussions. The panel discussion included views on the likely impact of the new Regulations on businesses on matters such as merger review and the role of the COMESA Business Council in strengthening dialogue between the private sector and the Quad C in light of the new Regulations.
