Although this is not the outcome we hoped for, we are proud of the public education about balloon pollution that was accomplished through this campaign. The important work of protecting Canada’s environment from plastic pollution must continue. - @eyeonthefly and @LeaGrie

Plastic pollution does not care when or what you celebrate. A Mylar balloon released in February for Valentine’s Day can persist in the environment for up to 4 years before breaking down. How do we educate the public about not releasing balloons into the sky? 🤔 #balloonsblow

Balloon🎈 releases are an international environmental threat. Indeed, many of the balloons that are released in Michigan wind up in the Great Lakes and wash ashore in Canada. As neighbours, 🇨🇦 and 🇺🇸 should work together to address this lethal form of plastic pollution.

Hey @LakelandLHS, did you lose something? If people attending your athletics events release plastic balloons into the sky, they end up coming down and creating pollution. This balloon with your school’s name and an eagle on it was found today on the coast of Lake Huron in Canada

Combining our totals, almost 1000 balloons on a small stretch of shoreline. Imagine how many are out there. 😔
