@rugbyhistorian We think Christowe's skull and crossbones first appeared before 1866, a motif borrowed from the 17th Lancers. Our first photograph of it is in 1877. Here is an example from 1896 (most photographs show the boys with their arms crossed so you can't see the emblem clearly!)

A house at Rugby School wore a small black badge on a white jersey. But one house at Cheltenham College wore a jersey exactly like Cardiff's first one: TD Selby Cardiff's first captain went to the school with with other early Cardiff men. I think that must be its inspiration

Seems yesterday was the anniversary of the first cardiff rfc game in 1876,played Newport RFC. their original shirts were replaced with the blue and black after mothers of the players deemed them inappropriate! But anyone know why this was chosen as the first strip?

The first recorded sporting success of Ethiopia's Prince Alamayu - beating 67 other boys to come third in a race at Cheltenham College's sports day on April 4, 1873. "His success appeared to be a popular one," reported the Cheltenham Examiner. @CheltColArchive @CheltCollege
