SpaceX claimed this altitude was unexpected and increased risks. Amazon Leo argues its launches are within license parameters, it was transparent with the FCC and SpaceX about the altitude change, and operates within industry safety standards. Amazon Leo also says it is committed to long-term changes to further mitigate conjunction risk. They state that SpaceX's concerns arose after SpaceX lowered the altitude of its Starlink constellation, creating overlap. Amazon Leo claims its parameters comply with industry standards and best practices using a 1E-5 conjunction risk threshold. They highlight that SpaceX's assertions rely on internal risk models that the FCC rejected when evaluating Amazon Leo’s orbital debris mitigation plans. W-6 is now in orbit, and the Varda team continues the steady march toward routine, autonomous hypersonic reentry. Funded through the @AFResearchLab, W-6 carries two types of payloads: an interior autonomous system will determine the vehicle’s position during the GPS blackout on reentry. On the exterior of the capsule, instrumented thermal protection material from @SandiaLabs, as well as “e-Char” heatshield tiles from @NASA will gather high-fidelity data under real reentry conditions.
