Around 2.1 million acres of floodplain were developed between 2001 and 2019, new #AGUpubs research reports. Roughly half of that development was in Florida. More: lite.spr.ly/6001812f 📷:Wikimedia Commons/Jill Carlson

@CiarletD I lived in St Pete for 3 or 4 weeks and that was quite enough National Geographic for me.

@djspydermann Gonna be real with you, it wasn't gators after this. It was snakes. Turns out, racers are as fast in water as they are on land. They didn't seem too happy with the flooding.

@noahacacias Two of three were returned to street, and hopefully back to the storm drain they came from. One I lost, and I'm pretty sure it made it to the backyard. Still don't know where it went.

@raccoon2u2 It was pointed out to me that these are walking catfish. They can be out of water for almost an entire day.

@Caleb_Mathis Contrary to what people are suggesting, I did not eat them. I herded two back to the street, and they took off towards the storm drain (where I assume they came from). Another one I tried to get with a bucket, but it escaped into my backyard. Plenty of water back there for now.

@NshMex What I've learned from X is that walking catfish are apparently all over Florida! Literally everywhere.

@gotsumpnferya And based on the rest of the comments, I need to to be importing them to the nearest frying pan!

@CiarletD I used to see these in SoFla after heavy rains. Clarias batrachus is an invasive species.

@WhenOnKStreet If by body of water you mean storm drain, then hopefully. I herded two of them back out to road where they came from. Nearest lake is 5 blocks away.

@Tuckertown I herded two back to the street gutter. Another I tried to catch in a bucket, but it escaped. May be in backyard.

@CiarletD Wow, do you live near a large body of water? How far did they make it to get to your area?
