Turin is a compact 50-square-mile city of 850,000 people. Very dense, walkable, doing well after experience similar post-industrial collapse as Detroit. But turin has great courtyard blocks, so of course it is doing better Turin was auto-industry powerhouse centered on Fiat and it too lost manufacturing jobs to globalization and automation. But Turin avoided the same level of collapse because it retained a dense, walkable urban fabric and experienced far less suburbanization. It also diversified earlier into services, design, and research, and aggressively reused former industrial sites.
