Oil made the country incredibly wealthy. Caracas, the city where I spent my childhood, was known as the Paris of South America.

When Christopher Columbus and the Spanish landed on its shores on their third voyage, they described it as Heaven on Earth.

Venezuela produced and sold a vast amount of oil used by the Allies to win WWII.
Simon Bolivar was Venezuelan, known as the George Washington of South America, led a Revolution against the Spanish and secured independence for the top half of South America.
Venezuela used to have a very good relationship with the US.
Everything wrong with Venezuela today is self inflicted.
