When I challenged Nicola Sturgeon over using the Covid pandemic to promote herself rather than get public health messages across, which could and should have been done by professionals, I was criticized. Now most people accept that she was & remains a greedy self publicist.

This was the moment Nicola Sturgeon reached the final rung of Hell.

On Tuesday morning, a planning hearing will determine an application to demolish the category B-listed former McCorquodale’s Print Works on Maxwell Street. It remains an important part of Glasgow’s architectural and industrial heritage – the distinctive Italianate façade with its Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson cast iron railings from the Saracen Foundry is an important part of the city centre conservation area, particularly in a street that was badly damaged by the demolition of the St. Enoch Railway Station in 1977. As a printing firm heavily associated with the railway industry, this only adds to its importance to the city’s heritage.
The owner originally planned to retain the façade of the building as part of the redevelopment, and their recent U-turn on this commitment seems to be motivated by profit margin rather than any serious structural justification, which are insufficient grounds under national and local planning policies for listed buildings. The structural engineering report and the stonemason’s reports from both 2022 and 2024 do not provide any conclusive evidence that the façade is beyond repair, indeed they both set out reasonable methods for how to repair and retain the façade as part of any new development.
I am pleased that both Glasgow City Council planners and officers at Historic Environment Scotland agree with me and the 52 others who objected to this demolition. The estimated cost to repair the listed façade is reasonable for such a prime city centre location, especially with grant funding for conservation of listed buildings available.
There are several good examples nearby of how to retain such historic facades, including the classical A-listed Custom House of 1840 that was integrated into the new Clayton Hotel, the B-listed warehouse from 1875 on Trongate that was incorporated into the new Candleriggs Square development and the B-listed art nouveau Cotterell & Sons warehouse by J. Gibb Morton from 1903 across the road on Howard Street, which has been incorporated into the Q Park.
I am supportive of efforts to bring this derelict McCorquodale’s building back into use and I would encourage the owner to recognise that they have no case for full demolition, to respect the listed façade of 90 Maxwell Street and incorporate it into a new planning application. I had hoped to attend the hearing on Tuesday to make these points to the Planning Applications Committee, but unfortunately, I am now required to be in Parliament. @MurphyNiallGLA will be in attendance to make representations on behalf of the objectors.

@MrJohnNicolson @C20Society Thankfully it has now been superseded by a more sensitive redesign after a slew of objections and refusal by planning officers in September 2022. New images below. heraldscotland.com/news/25621776.…

Hideous conversion of Glasgow’s historic Art Deco Watt Brothers building. Look at that monstrous roof extension. @C20Society

Hi @MyGlasgowCC , BinHub NH02-193, the ‘general waste’ bins were emptied today but the crew left the overflow on the pavement, and returned the bin back-to-front so that it can only be used from the road. There’s also fly tipped stuff. Can you send a crew to sort? @AngusCMillar

English

@MyGlasgowCC that's a bit odd - the bin hubs have a QR code for reporting issues, which now don't work. Can this be reviewed please @AngusCMillar - perhaps the QR codes on the hubs can be updated if this is a permanent change?
English

@Colin_Fergus Hi, you can report this issue here on our website glasgow.gov.uk/article/4248/R…, Thanks ^LD
English

@MyGlasgowCC the QR code on the on-street bin hubs no longer takes you to the page for reporting issues with the hubs, can that be fixed please?
English

@peakay81 @BrugesGroup A agree - I think it would be fabulously popular
English

@BrugesGroup I think a lot of people would welcome the return of mutually free movement. Being able to live, invest, speculatively move to mainland Europe without work sponsorship and a return to low education fees would appeal to many people.
English

Rejoiners are fundamentally dishonest about their proposition.
Not only would rejoining the EU mean a return to freedom of movement and laws made in Brussels, not Westminster, but would require giving up the £ and joining Schengen.
About as attractive as stale vomit.
Gully Foyle #UKTrade@TerraOrBust
So as covered by the Independent and others this weekend, YouGov polling has yet again confirmed what we already knew: 🇬🇧 Brits don't want to rejoin the EU if they have to take Euro and Schengen 🇪🇺 The EU don't want us to rejoin unless we do take Euro and Schengen It's over.
English

Hi @MyGlasgowCC currently lots of rat sightings around Elderslie St, G3, and the bins on Sandyford Place Lane are probably a big draw. Can overspill be lifted and area monitored please? @AngusCMillar
