Don’t waste your time comparing your journey to someone else’s…worrying about this players offer or that players offer….asking why they made it when….focus on becoming part of that 7%! Focus on YOUR journey! Comparison is the thief of joy!

Breaking into coaching is DIFFICULT THERE ARE SO MANY THAT WANT THE JOBS BUT FEW OPENINGS EXIST! If you’re looking to get your foot in the proverbial door, here are somethings you need to know: 1. Regardless of level, pay is abysmal to start! That’s if you’re LUCKY enough to get paid at all! MANY begin as volunteers! 2. You may not be doing any coaching! Get ready to clean, drive, do laundry, monitor academics, setup locker rooms, make food runs, manage equipment, and a myriad of other responsibilities that do not involve actual coaching. 3. The hours are often long, tedious, and erratic at best. 60 + hours a week is not unheard of at all. 4. It can be especially difficult if you already have a family. 5. You’re not going to walk into a Head Coaching position tomorrow! It takes time! Many have coached for 10, 15 or more years and are still an assistant. 6. In EVERYTHING you do, work your absolute hardest to make your Head Coach look brilliant! 7. Be humble and never think something is beneath you! No task, no request, no position. Be open to it all! 8. If you’re serious about breaking into the business, be open to ALL opportunities because you never know where it can lead! 9. Become VERY good at photoshop and video editing! This is a huge way to standout! 10. NETWORK! NETWORK! NETWORK! It will be the lifeblood of everything you do!

Only slightly less than 7% of high school players make it to one of the levels of college hoops! If you do then you’re in that percentage and you should ALWAYS celebrate your journey because many would do anything to switch places with you!

NBA teams often ask me about hip mobility before they ask about strength numbers when evaluating NBA prospects. If you’re a young hooper make sure you prioritize mobility / flexibility in your training program. In return you’ll feel better, move better, and play better.
