However this war ends, Zelensky - like Suárez facing Tejero - will already have his finest moment behind him. And whatever mistakes he may still make, Ukrainians will remember him as the president who did not run. Він не втік. Heroes may not be real, but people need them nonetheless. (Link in the profile👈)

"Islamic voters" sink Meloni’s constitutional referendum, writes Tommaso Cerno, editor-in-chief of Il Giornale. Even seasoned international observers often have little idea how low right-wing tabloids in Italy can go.

As an Italian abroad, it's shocking how the Meloni government gets good press abroad for *doing exactly the same things* that Berlusconi governments used to do *and get bad press abroad for* 🤦‍♂️
Giulio Mattioli@giulio_mattioli

Fascinating how sympathetic centrist high-brow German weekly Zeit is towards Meloni here. Keep in mind: this judicial reform is the *same* that Berlusconi always wanted (but never managed) to introduce. *And we know what his issue with the judiciary was*x.com/zeitonline/sta…

Trump’s threat to destroy Iran’s power infrastructure was met with embarrassed silence by the so-called “international community.” Despite being a clear war crime, depriving millions of civilians of electricity is now increasingly treated as an acceptable tactic - from Ukraine to Gaza and now from Cuba to Iran
Davide Maria De Luca@DM_Deluca

«As I look out from my apartment in the Ukrainian capital, where flickering street lights manage somehow to stay on, it is difficult not to think about the opposite situation the worst-case scenario, in which the city officially enters an energy catastrophe. Sadly, one does not have to look far to see what this city would become if energy were to disappear altogether. Gaza has been almost without electricity for more than two years and two millions people can rely exclusively on the power that comes from diesel generator, with fuel import severely restricted by Israel. According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, 90 per cent of households lack enough electricity to charge their phones, and in the entire Strip there are no functioning sewage or water treatment plants. Even if the temperature are relatively mild compared to Ukraine, ten children died of exposure since the beginning of winter. Kyiv and Gaza, Kharkiv and Rafah are far from isolated examples. In the last decades, no nation has refrained from cutting electricity to enemy civilian in prolonged conflict, when it has had the meaning to do so - not even the Ukrainians, who, in reprisal for the attacks they endure, have at times managed to interrupt power and heating in several Russian border cities». The incredibly ambitious attempt by Israel and the United States to bomb a revolution into existence in Iran has been largely underdiscussed. From a military point of view, it is simply unprecedented. In the past, similar attempts at regime change were carried out in countries already mired in civil war, such as Libya in 2011, when the bombing began after weeks of fighting in which the Gaddafi regime had lost major cities and suffered significant defections; or Afghanistan in 2001, where the Northern Alliance had been fighting the Taliban for years and controlled a substantial portion of the country’s territory. Nothing of the sort was happening in Iran. Street protests had been bloodily repressed, but the regime had largely restored control by the time the bombs began to fall. There was no precedent, no blueprint for destroying an unchallenged regime exclusively from the air. As a result, the coalition resorted to bizarre, and probably illegal, tactics - such as the decapitation of the civilian leadership or the bombing of police stations and roadblocks - as if the control a regime exerts over its population depended primarily on the physical infrastructure of its security apparatus. In a way, this mirrors the outlandish ambition of Putin’s plan for his “special military operation” in Ukraine. Worryingly, the failure of both attempts does not seem to have changed policymakers’ growing reliance on military force to achieve far-reaching political goals.

🚨U.S. to allow Iran to get ~14 billion dollars (!!!) in oil revenue 🚨This is a huge financial concession to Iran by the U.S. 🚨It is the first time U.S. is buying Iranian oil since 1996 🚨It's all happening in the middle of a war against...Iran
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent@SecScottBessent

Iran is the head of the snake for global terrorism, and through President Trump’s Operation Epic Fury, we are winning this critical fight at an even faster pace than anticipated. In response to Iran’s terrorist attacks against global energy infrastructure, the Trump Administration will continue to deploy America’s economic and military might to maximize the flow of energy to the world, strengthen global supply, and seek to ensure market stability. Today, the Department of the Treasury is issuing a narrowly tailored, short-term authorization permitting the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea. At present, sanctioned Iranian oil is being hoarded by China on the cheap. By temporarily unlocking this existing supply for the world, the United States will quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets, expanding the amount of worldwide energy and helping to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran. In essence, we will be using the Iranian barrels against Tehran to keep the price down as we continue Operation Epic Fury. This temporary, short-term authorization is strictly limited to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new purchases or production. Further, Iran will have difficulty accessing any revenue generated and the United States will continue to maintain maximum pressure on Iran and its ability to access the international financial system. So far, the Trump Administration has been working to bring around 440 million additional barrels of oil to the global market, undercutting Iran’s ability to leverage its disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump’s pro-energy agenda has driven U.S. oil and gas production to record levels, strengthening energy security and lowering fuel costs. Any short-term disruption now will ultimately translate into longer-term economic gains for Americans – because there is no prosperity without security.

An observation from watching more than three years of Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, oil export terminals and pipeline nodes. They burn spectacularly and cinematically. But Russia — under sanctions and without access to Western spare parts and technologies — has more or less managed to mitigate the impact and repair most of the damage. Gulf states, with all their resources, can fix things infinitely faster.

Alla faccia di “this is not our war”. “Dobbiamo prima sentire da Stati Uniti e Israele quando ritengono di aver raggiunto i loro obiettivi militari in Iran, prima di poter definire congiuntamente una futura architettura di sicurezza per la regione. Fino ad allora, non c’è alcun ruolo né per la NATO né per l’operazione Aspides dell’UE.”
GermanForeignOffice@GermanyDiplo

We first need to hear from the US & Israel when they expect to have achieved their military objectives in Iran before we can jointly define a future security architecture for the region. Until then, there is no role for NATO or the EU’s Operation Aspides.—@AussenMinDE #FAC 3/5

We live in the era of stupid militarization. In Italy, one of the safest country in Europe, army armored vehicles are parked in front of railway stations

@DM_Deluca Liberal judiciary compounded with two decades of suicidal opening to immigration have obliterated rule of law in Italy, where decline of security is the sharpest in the EU. So stupid militarization steps in, in a futile attempt to redress the inevitable

"Strade Sicure" is honestly degrading for the soldiers themselves. Highly trained military personnel are reduced to standing still in front of stations like decorative statues, instead of doing what they actually joined the Army for: training, improving their capabilities, and preparing for real missions. Especially in times like these, our soldiers should be training and developing their skills — not spending hours doing static guard duty that doesn’t even use their expertise.

@DM_Deluca You are so fixed on the murder rate, but murder rate is very low even in the worst countries of Europe. Much of it happens between relatives or people who know each other well, or between criminals. The real issues are robbery, theft, rape, violence, etc.

I worked in Albania and Kosovo and I still have friend there, but I rather not stick to vibes, because I understand the basic principle of reality that personal experience are limited. Albania had until recently 5 times the murder rate of Italy, and now it hovers at more than double
