Justice Robert's disgusting moral preening aside, this case really could have gone either way - the drafters of the 14th Amendment did an extremely poor job writing it.
I suspect the citizenship clause should apply only to freedmen, but I understand the rational of the decision.

@LibertyToad @SonnieJohnson Not gonna find me disagreeing on the absolute evil of slavery, but it was not fundamental to the founding and I am not going to pretend like it was.
America did not own slaves, the people who owned them did, & put the country through hell to protect & grow their evil institution
