There is a version of medicine where independent physicians cooperate on contracting, data, and political voice, then compete on everything else: service, outcomes, experience, access.
That version is called co-opetition.
It already exists in every other industry that survived consolidation.

An mri isn’t $18,000 even though that’s the chargemaster price at the large health system.
The mri is $500. That’s what the independent imaging center charges.
The $18,000 pays for corruption. It pays for the c suite and layer upon layer of useless administration acting as a jobs program for low skilled downwardly mobile people.

@davidasinclair Not sure this is accurate David. Presbyopia, the progressive decrease in accommodation, begins in childhood. From >30 diopters of near focus in childhood we decline to <8 at 40yo or so. This phenomenon pre-dates ubiquitous sunglasses wear by 100’s of yrs.

VC poured $4.8 billion into healthcare infrastructure companies last year. Not into clinics. Not into care. Into the billing layer. The EHR layer. The revenue cycle layer. They did not “invest” in healthcare. They’re invested in the toll booth between the physician and the payment. 99.9% of VC money doesn’t treat patients. It invoices them.
