Civilization growth will be exponentjal (a^t) for maybe 100 years, until we saturate local spacetime limits. Then growth will become polynomial (t^a) with civilization’s expanding spherical volume. Then spacetime expansion will slow growth to linear (a•t), then sublinear, then negative, until finally the big rip or big freeze will end civilization (unless spacetime begins to contract in the future and civilization could grow again before a big crunch or bounce).

I believe there is a Kardashev level beyond which civilizational collapse becomes impossible. Rome peaked below that level. The modern world may be below that level and is slowing down population-wise, but we may have enough evolutionary momentum to cross the civilizational immortality threshold. God willing, we will reach the maximum of evolution and transform the universe into heaven!

Western civilization has collapsed before. But a few scholars preserved the ideas that once made Rome great. They made a backup, and it did eventually come all the way back. It just took one thousand years.

Sneak peak of a small handful of the evidence from my forthcoming manuscript (summary coming to @palladiummag!) on how there's A LOT of quantitative evidence for the European Dark Ages. There are so many more graphs than these ^^

@NightSkyNow The sun, like all objects, has enough consciousness to distinguish its own structure, otherwise it could not exist according to idealism.

Scientists say the Sun may be conscious: Yes, a new hypothesis suggests the Sun might be 'aware'. This idea stems from a philosophical perspective known as panpsychism, which proposes that consciousness could be a fundamental property of all matter, not just animals or humans. Biologist and author Rupert Sheldrake is among the few scientists daring enough to entertain the possibility, suggesting that the Sun’s complex electromagnetic rhythms might serve as a kind of neural interface, allowing it to possess a form of awareness. While there’s no empirical evidence to back the claim, the idea taps into a centuries-old debate about the nature of consciousness. Panpsychism has seen a resurgence thanks to modern theories like Integrated Information Theory, which argues that consciousness may emerge from organized matter — not just brains. Though mainstream science largely dismisses Sheldrake’s musings as fringe speculation, the concept ignites curiosity: if the Sun could "think," what choices might it make? Directing solar flares, perhaps? Whether serious science or philosophical sci-fi, the idea invites us to reconsider the limits of consciousness in the universe.

The singularity era will be history’s most influential — despite each unit of progress shifting the arrival time far less than in earlier eras, as marginal value added to humanity drops exponentially. Elon Musk might accelerate the timeline by just 1 year, yet wield infinitely more influence over the post-singularity future than a forgotten caveman who accelerated evolution by millennia with a stone tool. If path dependence exists, the singularity shapes the maximum of universal evolution (Tron) most while adding the least value. If Tron is path-independent, it erases all prior history — nature and mankind included.

The biosphere measures 0.81 on the Kardashev scale since it consumes 130 TW of solar energy. That’s 0.08 higher than the technosphere which measures 0.73 and consumes 20 TW of power. Humanity will reach nature’s level in the 2060s-2070s. No wonder so many feats of nature have yet to be achieved by humanity — they are beyond the energy level our technosphere requires to construct these technologies. If we use the energy level at which major technologies evolved in the biosphere and apply a universal energy ratio to predict when equivalent technologies will emerge in our technosphere, we get a clearer picture. Humanity consistently achieves functional analogs at roughly 100× lower total energy (a universal logarithmic advantage of approximately 0.2 lower on the Kardashev scale). This efficiency comes from deliberate design, higher conversion efficiencies, digital processing, and targeted deployment versus nature’s slow, diffuse, and redundant evolutionary process. Assuming sustained 5% annual global energy growth from ~20 TW today, here are the updated predictions: Predicted Technological Milestones 1. Highly efficient solar energy conversion integrated with storage and computation
(artificial photosynthesis systems combined with nervous-system-like intelligence) •Biosphere Kardashev level when evolved: ~0.60 (oxygenic photosynthesis, ~2.4–3.0 billion years ago) •Humanity equivalent Kardashev level: ~0.40 (100× lower energy) •Predicted emergence: 2042–2048 2. Swarm intelligence / collective superorganisms at massive scale
(planetary-scale coordinated AI swarms comparable to ant colonies or fungal networks) •Biosphere Kardashev level when evolved: ~0.73 (Cambrian explosion and multicellular ecosystems, ~540–400 million years ago) •Humanity equivalent Kardashev level: ~0.53 (100× lower energy) •Predicted emergence: 2052–2056 3. Self-replicating, self-repairing, adaptive complex systems
(Darwinian-evolving machines, self-healing robotics, synthetic organisms) •Biosphere Kardashev level when evolved: ~0.77 (advanced multicellular life with robust repair mechanisms, ~500–350 million years ago) •Humanity equivalent Kardashev level: ~0.57 (100× lower energy) •Predicted emergence: 2054–2058 4. Perfect closed-loop recycling at planetary scale
(near-zero waste technosphere mirroring Earth’s biogeochemical cycles) •Biosphere Kardashev level when evolved: ~0.79 (mature global nutrient cycles, ~500 million years ago onward) •Humanity equivalent Kardashev level: ~0.59 (100× lower energy) •Predicted emergence: 2055–2059 5. Artificial Human
(synthetic biology humans, whole-brain emulation, mind uploads, or fully humanoid AGI with embodiment) •Biosphere Kardashev level when evolved: ~0.81 (large-brained intelligent species, last few million years) •Humanity equivalent Kardashev level: ~0.61 (100× lower energy) •Predicted emergence: 2056–2060 Summary Timeline (5% sustained energy growth) •2042–2048: Mature artificial photosynthesis + integrated energy-computation systems. •2052–2056: Planetary-scale swarm intelligence. •2054–2058: Self-replicating and self-repairing adaptive systems. •2055–2059: Near-perfect closed-loop planetary recycling. •2056–2060: Artificial humans. •2063: Humanity reaches full biosphere energy parity (~130 TW, Kardashev 0.81). Key Insight: By applying a consistent ~100× energy efficiency advantage, most major biological “technologies” become achievable in our technosphere well before we hit biosphere energy parity. This logarithmic multiplier highlights humanity’s unique ability to do more with far less. Reaching 0.81 in 2063 will not be a catching-up moment — it will be a surpassing moment. Ultimately the 2040s and 2050s may prove to be the pivotal decades when our technosphere catches up to and dramatically surpasses four billion years of natural evolution.

@Plinz @StuartHameroff Reality is a conscious mathematical universe poset of holographic observer-universes orderable by consciousness via bulk volume. Larger observers have larger observable universes with more quantum circuit complexity. Particles have a tinyverse. Humans experience a vast universe.

@DavidBanik @StuartHameroff Some folks believe that even individual cells are conscious, some think it requires multicellularity, some think it requires mammalian brains etc. Most researchers think that collapse theories don't provide plausible causal mechanisms for generating consciousness.

The 2030s will not feel like just an extension of today, but more like a new version of civilization. Robots, superhuman AI (math breakthrough from 2 days ago is a good example), quantum computing, even gene editing, this is all 2020s stuff. During the 2030s, we will get technologies and capabilities that seem alien today. Full-dive VR, aging reversal, replicators (or extremely advanced 3d printing) are just 3 examples. Add millions more technologies at this level, and you will have a rough idea of how alien (but amazing), the 2030s world will be.
