I reached 90k followers overnight, so I figured it was a good time to remind you of my story. I’m a career corporate CFO (10 figure + revenue businesses). I’ve been in the accounting and finance profession for well over 2 decades, with nearly half that time as CFO of large multinational businesses. Through a combination of good opportunities and hard work I got up the ladder quickly. I had a few mentors along the way, but mostly worked it out for myself. The path to CFO felt a bit like a mystery, even after I’d walked it. Throughout my career I’ve loved to mentor others and tried to make that path clearer. In the Summer of 2021 I had the idea of starting a Twitter account to share my learnings. I opened the account, planned a couple of tweets and then did precisely nothing. It sat unused for over twelve months. Then in August of last year (8/13 to be precise), I was on vacation with my family, and remembered the account I had set up. It had 3 followers (all bots). I posted a few times, and figured no one would read it. It pretty much blew up straight away. By the end of the vacation I had 20k followers. And then I just kept going, I guess. My goal is simple. Most written content on the CFO role is shit. And I mean dog shit. Big 4 have a bunch of stuff, Gartner, etc. All written by people who have never done the job. I want to change that. I like writing, and find it clarifies my ideas and makes me a better CFO. It’s become a hobby, but one with real value for me, and I hope for others too. I have specialized in complex situations; turnarounds, exits, M&A, functional transformations, etc. Heavy handed stuff, which has needed me to understand stuff from first principles. I’ve been lucky to work with super-entrepreneurs, outstanding public company CEOs, and experienced boards. Not to mention all the great accounting and finance pros I’ve worked with along the way. I’ve also worked with a great number of idiots, and learned a bunch from them too. I enjoy documenting my ever changing views on what I’ve learned. And by remaining anonymous I can be more helpful to more people, and share much more. Here on twitter you can expect: - simple breakdowns of finance concepts - insight into CFO mindset - skills leading larger teams - broader business skills important for CFOs - how to make good finance career decisions - occasional hot takes on emerging finance topics - stupid memes On Twitter I just scratch the surface really. And for those that want to go further, in January, I launched a newsletter, where I dive deep into a specific topic each week. I’m particularly proud of the newsletter, because I think much of the content breaks new ground in terms of depth and practical application. Especially for aspiring CFOs. I get a bunch of messages (too many to handle now) explaining how my content has helped them. It’s made it’s way into university lectures, countless company slide decks, and been printed and stuck to office walls all round the world. That’s been pretty cool.
