Breaking🚨 Commissioners from the @californiapuc voted 3-0 to extend the life of our state's last nuclear plant, after hearing public comments at this morning's hearing. Although it's only for the additional 5 years, this decision sends a signal to the rest of the world watching - nuclear energy is VITAL to a reliable, clean energy system. Cheers to the advocates who called in and held the line. We live to fight another day.

@wholisticguy @SinineHarakas @JigarShahDC If you take that logic, doesn’t the existence of renewables also make the addition of more renewables on the grid a liability? Even if nuclear did not exist, the problem of renewables playing havoc with wholesale energy prices is a problem that has to be managed.

@SinineHarakas @JigarShahDC @DecoupleMedia The reliable output of nuclear is often touted, but that’s a liability when zero marginal cost renewables are pushing the wholesale price of energy in the middle of the day into the negatives. The grid demand needs to adapt to better absorb that dump load energy at zero cost.

@DecoupleMedia I suspect it would be kind of hard to get EDF to say develop an AP1000 someplace outside of France. Instinctively they are going to always want EPR's. Would OPG be seen as too tied to CANDU?

A remarkable point from @JigarShahDC: In offshore wind, developers like Orsted specializes in development. They don’t make the turbines, they are not the local utility. They can concentrate on development. 1/3

I wonder if there’s a role for OPG to grow into a nuclear developer in this vein. A capable developer would be reactor-agnostic and not tied to a location. They will go where the best projects are and bring their know-how. Anyhow, can’t wait to actually hear the episode! (3/3)

Interestingly, many offshore wind developers grew from utilities. I’m thinking of RWE, Iberdrola and EDF, all are mega utilities at home but operate as pure play offshore wind developers in markets like Taiwan. (2/3)

@JigarShahDC @DecoupleMedia @opg Look to the LNG space. Since 2015, dozens of multi-billion dollar projects have been built in the US. Bechtel built many of them, and as I'm sure you know Bechtel took over Vogtle about 5 years ago when Westinghouse fell down.

It’s frustrating that even if somehow we got another Rickover, it’s hard to tell how effective he would be. In the intervening decades since Nautilus and Shippingport, regulation has proliferated to an unimaginable degree.
