He could calculate seconds in a year and a half in two minutes, in his head, while enslaved, illiterate, and never having seen a classroom. His name was Thomas Fuller, also known as "Negro Tom" and the Virginia Calculator. Born around 1710 in what is now Benin, Thomas was kidnapped and shipped to America as a slave at just fourteen years old. He spent the next 66 years of his life working the fields on a Virginia farm, from sunrise to sunset. Thomas never learned to read or write. He never saw a classroom or received any formal education. Yet, he possessed one of the most remarkable mathematical minds ever documented. In his 70s, two antislavery campaigners, William Hartshorne and Samuel Coates, heard rumors about an enslaved man with extraordinary calculating abilities. Skeptical but curious, they sought him out. What happened next was recorded by Dr. Benjamin Rush, a Founding Father and prominent abolitionist, in 1789. The challenges they gave Thomas would stump most people with paper, pen, and time. But Thomas solved them in his head, within minutes, despite his age and exhaustion from decades of hard labor. First challenge: “How many seconds are there in a year and a half?” Thomas closed his eyes, calculated for two minutes, and answered: “47,304,000.” Correct. Second challenge: “How many seconds has a man lived who is 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours old?” This required complex math, accounting for leap years and converting everything into seconds. It would take someone with paper and pen at least 15 minutes. Thomas answered in 90 seconds: “2,210,500,800.” One of the men, calculating frantically, insisted Thomas was wrong. But Thomas immediately corrected him: “Stop, massa, you forget the leap year.” After adding the leap years, their calculations matched Thomas’s exactly. Third challenge: “A farmer has six sows, and each sow has six female pigs in the first year, with the same increase for eight years, how many sows will the farmer have?” This was exponential growth math, requiring an understanding of geometric progression. After ten minutes, Thomas answered: “34,588,806.” Again, perfect. Hartshorne and Coates were astounded. Here was a man who had never been taught math, who couldn’t read, yet could outperform educated mathematicians with only his mind. But what struck them most was his response when Coates lamented that Thomas had never received a formal education. Thomas simply said: “No, massa, it is best I had no learning, for many learned men be great fools.” Thomas died in 1790, still enslaved, still on that Virginia farm. But his story helped prove a crucial point for abolitionists: slavery didn’t diminish intelligence. Thomas’s brilliance was irrefutable, a testament to the genius that slavery couldn’t bury. Today, we remember Thomas Fuller, not just for his incredible math, but for the minds stolen by slavery. How many more geniuses like him were lost to history? We'll never know, but we know at least one: Thomas Fuller, the man who could calculate 47 million seconds in two minutes.
